There is considerable interest in using guided waves for wide-area structural health monitoring of plate-like structures, because of their sensitivity to early damages and their relatively slow geometrical decay. Lamb waves are suitable for quantitative imaging of laminar damage, particularly if the damage can be characterised by a single parameter, e.g. by the local value of bending stiffness. However current imaging methods rely on the availability of baseline response. The present work investigates to extend quantitative diffraction tomography imaging to use modeconverted scatter data, thereby providing a baseline-free approach to in-situ imaging. Using simulated data generated analytically for a circular blind hole in an isotropic plate, it is shown that it is possible to use a diffraction tomography formulation that takes into account mode-converted scattered waves to image laminar damage. The results show that the damage was accurately reconstructed for non-converted scatter wave modes. But only the size of the damage could be reconstructed when converted wave modes were used because of some band-pass imaging effects that are inherent in the diffraction tomography framework.

______________________________________________________________________________ MOTS-CLES DE L’AUTEUR : deuil, silence, filiation, memoire, roman

This wild flower identification guide was first published in 1981 and is still widely accepted as the best of its kind for its combination of meticulous illustrations and the use of keys to aid recognition. For this new edition, the Latin names have been revised in accordance with the current classification system. It is now published as the ideal book for the serious student of British and north-west European wild plants, providing a bridge between picture identification guides and the non-illustrated academic floras.

Existing vibration-based approaches for damage detection are qualitative. The present work explores the concept of an inverse method to obtain a quantitative characterisation of impact damaged structures, based on matching experimentally observed deflection or curvature profiles to parametric, model based, predictions of those profiles. Experimental and computational studies have been undertaken on laminated beam specimens containing delamination damage. It is shown that the curvature profiles cannot be correctly predicted by an inhomogeneity model in which the delaminated region is modelled as a region of reduced bending stiffness. Instead, it is essential to retain the geometrical feature of having at least one delamination. An inverse approach is implemented for estimating key model parameters based on matching finite element model predictions to full-field deflection or curvature profiles measured experimentally under forced vibration. It is indicated that it may be possible to optimise the detection and characterisation of specific types of damage by a judicious choice of the frequency and configuration of the applied loads.

It has recently been shown that it is possible to formulate an analogue of diffraction tomography within the framework of Mindlin plate theory, and that this can be used for imaging certain forms of laminar damage, most notably delamination damage in fibre composites. This paper presents a comparison of imaging algorithms using as input the multistatic data matrix, which is not restricted to far-field measurements, unlike diffraction tomography. This new approach, based on linear inverse theory, offers advantages of (i) being able to perform near-field imaging; (ii) using arbitrary source-receiver arrays, which can therefore be tailored to fit in with geometrical constraints within the structure; and (iii) being able to cater for known background complexities, such as the presence of stiffeners, through the use of a Green's function that incorporates the influence of those complexities on wave propagation through the structure. These advantages will greatly facilitate the practical implementation of this new algorithm for in-situ imaging of structural damage. A new algorithm based on the singular value decomposition of the multi-static data matrix is presented that leads more naturally to a formalism for dealing with noisy data through truncation of the retained singular values in accordance with the signal-to-noise ratio.
