RHA has been the subject of investigation for its pozzolanic activity that heavily linked to the controlled temperature burning process in order to achieve amorphous form of silica. This paper present the characterization of RHA that was taken directly from the boiler of rice mill with uncontrolled burning temperature. Particle size analysis revealed grinding process of RHA could significantly curb the diameter size and increased specific surface area. Microstructure analysis suggest that RHA is very porous and EDX test showed the chemical content of RHA. The prospect of using uncontrolled burnt RHA as part of construction material is feasible.

Black uncontrolled burnt Rice Husk Ash (RHA) obtained from the boiler of rice mill is a waste product which usually causing air and water pollution. As a waste, RHA has very little value and commercial use. Hence this study examined the pozzolanic potential of RHA as a cement replacement in the Compressed Stabilized Earth Brick (CSEB) production. This is an experiment-based study that characterized the raw materials used to produce CSEB samples. In the characterization of raw materials, the XRD analysis found that the burning temperature of the RHA in the rice mill boiler was around 700-800°C. Pozzolanic assessments on the RHA found that it possesses pozzolanic characteristic within, and conformed to ASTM C 618 – 03. Besides that, this study has also managed to develop a new method of determining the pozzolanicity of RHA using electrical resistivity approach which is more practical than Luxan conductivity method. In term of pozzolanic conductivity, it was found that the RHA has a va...

The addition of fibers in concrete increases bridging force in interfacial transition zones inside the concrete matrix. Pineapple Leaf Fiber (PALF) is a natural fiber that has the potential to replace artificial fibers as reinforcement on concrete. As reinforcement fiber in concrete, PALF will undergo fibrillation and water absorption in concrete mixture and will change the mechanical properties of fresh concrete. So, the purpose of this study is to study the workability characteristics of fresh state concrete given PALF. Some variations of PALF composition are 0.04, 0.09, and 0.15 % wt. of cement is mixed into fresh concrete mixture with water-cement (w/c) ratio variations of 0.35, 0.38, and 0.41. The planned concrete is high-strength concrete, then the provisions of determination of coarse and fine aggregates using sieve analysis according to high-strength concrete material standards and concrete mixtures are given superplasticizer 0.09% wt. of cement constantly for all mixtures. ...

Rice Husk Ash (RHA) as sand replacement and filler of Foamed Concrete (FC) has contributed to increase the strength. FC with RHA has increased the slab resistant of impact loading. When RHA granulate filled the FC porous, it would delay the collapsing of cell porous due to the increasing strain of porous walls. The RHA granulate increased the elasticity of the porous walls of FC. Other than that, the walls porous would be more plastic when it was subjected to compressive stress that generated by impact loading. The impact test conducted an instrument drop-weight impact tower to generate various impact velocities of non-deformable impactor on slab of FC and FC with RHA. Results show that FC with RHA created the crater without fragments. Means while, FC clearly create radial crack and fragments within the crater field. However, both slab materials did not generate spalling nor scabbing upon impact and the influence of porosity produces only local damage due to the mechanism of brittle...

Fiber concrete has been widely known for its ability to prevent cracks especially micro crack. Natural fiber concrete was one way to accommodate the use of waste natural fibers and at the same time producing sustainable materials. This research tried to examine the workability of Coconut Fiber Concrete (CFC) that incorporated 2% of Coconut Fiber (CF) with Rice Husk Ash (RHA) as a sand replacement with ratio 10, 20 and 30% respectively. Three types of water-cement ratios were used 0.38, 0.41 and 0.44. The result showed that slump value ranging from 3.5 cm and 4 cm. The addition of 20% of RHA resulted in the steady slump value for all water-cement ratio. The CFC is on the same par compare to the steel fiber concrete which incorporated 1.28% fiber.

Limited natural energy sources give impact on the selection of the material that can subtract energy consumption. Regarding to conservation energy, in the field of building and construction, the selection of concrete with good heat capacity is a requirement, besides light in weight. The objective of this study was to investigate the thermal conductivity of Foamed Concrete containing Rice Husk Ash (FCRHA). Rice husk ash (RHA) is the type fly ash that can absorb heat due to moisture. RHA The measurement of thermal conductivity on FC and FCRHA was conducted using box insulation and recorded using thermal data logger. The result showed that FCRHA absorb heat from the beginning when the heat is distributed, while FC slow absorp the heat. Modification FC by replacing sand partially with RHA provides an evolution to profitable use of construction materials in the heat absorption.

Investigation of Rice Husk Ash (RHA) thoroughly under controlled burning is regular issue to obtain result to produce the amorphous silica that has high pozzolanic reactivity characteristic. This paper offered an observation about characteristic of ground and un-ground of un-controlled burning temperature RHA that were taken from rice millings in Muar, Johor Malaysia. Such tests as X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Particle Size Analysis and Specific Area Surface, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron microscope (SEM) were conducted in this investigation to carry out the characteristic of RHA samples. The results show that the RHA was consist approximately 89.90% of silica and the RHA possessed the amorphous particle were dominant than its crystalline part. This proves that the RHA has a big potential as a pozzolanic material considering the silica content and porous structure. In addition, particle size analysis decides whether the pozzolanic reactivity can be increased by grinding process.

Compressed Earth Brick (CEB) as building material has many advantages compared to conventional fired clay brick in the view of sustainability, moreover if incorporated uncontrolled burnt RHA waste that usually dumped off since it has no commercial value. This paper tried to assess the effect of soil types of clay and laterite in CEB properties which abundantly available in Malaysia. The result showed that the compressive strength of CEB with 20% RHA using clay at 5.5 MPa is better than that of laterite 4.9 MPa, and both exceed that of commercial unfired clay brick from UK.

Recently, foamed concrete has become a popular construction material that can be used in wide range of constructions application. Whilst the Rice Husk Ash (RHA) as agro-waste is contain high amount of silicon dioxide. RHA is produced in significant amount every year from agriculture countries. RHA has potential as a material to produce foamed concrete. In this research RHA has been used as a replacement for fine aggregate which used in construction as ordinary concrete material. In this study, foamed concrete with target density 1400, 1600 and 1800 kg/m3 has been produced. The compressive strength of foamed concrete with RHA has been tested. Concrete with Ratio 1:3 of RHA/Sand has higher compressive strength than ratios 3:1 and 2:2 of RHA/sand for every density. XRD and XRF test has been used to determinate chemical composition and crystalline structure of RHA. The result showed that RHA is an amorphous material which amorphous is important thing to pozzolanic process when hydration...

In relation to the conventional concrete then foamed concrete (FC) is weaker. Therefore FC was added by Rice Husk Ash (RHA) to alter the strength without eliminating its characteristic as aerated concrete. Actually function of RHA is substitute the sand partly. The strength of concrete affects to prevent the dynamic impact loading. However FC as aerated concrete can absorb energy impact by its porosity. Both of characteristics were presented in this investigation. SEM and EDS detected that pozzolanic reaction was done when FC was processing hydration of cement in admixture. The presence of RHA increased the strength of concrete owing to cement hydration process and pozzolanic reactivity of RHA. The result of impact loading on slab FC target displayed that FC with RHA was more shallow than without RHA. Beside of that local damage showed that FC with RHA denser and is not impression of fragments than FC without RHA.

Assessment of pozzolanic reactivity is commonly based on a direct and indirect method which mostly used the electrical conductivity method. However, these methodsare limited by long-duration requirements or need to be done in the laboratory. By modifying the sandbox test to measure the electrical resistivity of Rice Husk Ash (RHA) as pozzolan, this investigation tries to offer a simpler method that can be done in situ. The RHA was heated in the oven with several temperatures varying from 100C to 600C and tested for its electrical resistivity by mixing it with laboratory-gradelime. The value of electrical resistivity is then compared with the value of the Luxan method by using the same materials. The results showed a similar trend with the electrical conductivity method. Hence new pozzolanic classification was proposed in linewith this new pozzolanic assessment.
