The neoichnology of the freshwater mussel Anodonta ( Sinanodonta ) woodiana (Lea, 1834) is examin... more The neoichnology of the freshwater mussel Anodonta ( Sinanodonta ) woodiana (Lea, 1834) is examined herein in some continental environments of Umbria (central Italy), such as lake-margin and river dam-margin settings. This study, based on analysis of about 200 traces, reveals that this mussel burrows employing two types of behaviours: bulldozing which produces horizontal meanders to straight bilobate traces, often filled with peloidal faecal pellets (pseudofaeces and backfill), and resting (vertical stationary into substrate) while filter feeding. A new type of very soft substrate, the ‘cloudground’ is proposed. It is placed at the water-sediment interface, above the soupground. After four years of observation, the cloudground was buried with shells and traces, preserving through the fossilization barrier about 20% of the Anodonta traces. Threonine (Thr) is the third limiting essential amino acid after methionine and lysine in cornsoy... more Threonine (Thr) is the third limiting essential amino acid after methionine and lysine in cornsoybean based diets of broilers. Dietary imbalance of Thr, therefore, results in a poor growth performance in broilers. This review summarizes literature data on the known effects of dietary levels of Thr on growth performance, gut morphology, immunity and carcass characteristics in broilers. Due to continuous improvement in genetic potential and management practices for poultry production, dietary Thr requirements are changing. A number of studies have shown that supplementation of Thr in broiler diet at a higher level than the current NRC recommendation (0.74-0.81%), increases body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and improves gut morphology, carcass quality and immune status, mainly by enhancing the functional capability of digestive system and immune organs (spleen, bursa, and thymus). ABSTRACT A new specimen of Ranina propinqua Ristori, 1891 from the Early Pleistocene (Gelasian–Ca... more ABSTRACT A new specimen of Ranina propinqua Ristori, 1891 from the Early Pleistocene (Gelasian–Calabrian) of Orzalume-Cottano section (Orvieto, Umbria, central Italy) is reported. The study of this complete specimen results in a detailed diagnosis for the species not reported in the original description by Ristori. Although the ecology and behaviour of Raninidae display a broad spectrum of bathymetric and sedimentological ranges, the sedimentological and palaeoecological data for the study specimens suggest that R. propinqua could be associated to relatively shallow, coastal marine environments, at least during the last 2 Ma.

Integrated biostratigraphical, sedimentological and palaeoecological analyses have been carried out, and some palaeoenvironmental inferences are also proposed. The studied decapod community, dated to the early Pleistocene, is herein referred to the upper bathyal zone; several palaeoenvironmental factors (cool water conditions at the sea floor, clay soft bottom, nutrients, very low environmental energy and sedimentation rate) influenced and promoted the crustacean settlement. Key words: Crustacea, Decapoda, Axiidea, Brachyura, early Pleistocene, Italy.

ABSTRACT Bizzarri R. et al., Early Pleistocene distal pyroclastic-fallout material in continental... more ABSTRACT Bizzarri R. et al., Early Pleistocene distal pyroclastic-fallout material in continental and marine deposits of western Umbria (Italy): chemical composition, provenance and correlation potential. (IT ISSN 0394-3356, 2010). Distal pyroclastic fallout material has been recently documented in the Orvieto area (Umbria, central Italy), within Early Pleistocene continental and marine deposits. Due to the age constrains, the association with Middle Pleistocene "Paleobolsena" Volcanic events can be excluded. In order to individuate a possible provenance, the Laser Ablation – Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analytical procedure has been carried out. The procedure has been tested on pumice lapilli (2-5 mm) and glass inclusions contained in idiomorphic clinopyroxene crystals, both coming from the Early Pleistocene conglomerate of the Il Caio section. The study is still in progress: some preliminary results are here proposed. Data on melt inclusions seem to be more reliable than data on pumice fragments for the purpose of recognising pristine magmatic compositions of pyroclastic material and to achieve information on the provenance of volcanic clasts. Nevertheless, both data suggest the affinity with the Roman Comagmatic Provence. Since crystal fragments with melt inclusions are common in many distal fallout deposits, the LA-ICP-MS protocol presented here can be of general application to tephrochronology and volcanological studies. Together with the biostratigraphic record, indeed, the pro-cedure looks promising as a tool for stratigraphic correlations and geodynamic reconstructions. Casacce). La segnalazione del sito risale al 1620 da parte dello studioso Federico Cesi (fondatore dell’ Accademia dei Lincei) e la scoperta e conservazione dei fossili ha subito alterne vicende fino al 1986, quando alcuni paleontofili si accorsero che, in seguito ai lavori effettuati in una cava di argilla, erano stati messi in luce un gran numero (circa 50) di tronchi fossili. Dal 1988 la zona è sotto tutela e vincolo da parte della Sovrintendenza che vieta l’estrazione di argilla in loco, mentre tronchi sono stati riparati da strutture provvisorie che però non hanno un adeguato ruolo sia sotto il profilo visivo che pratico. Nel record geologico è facile rinvenire resti di alberi, ma non trovarne in posizione vitale, in numero, grandezza e buono stato di conservazione come a Dunarobba.
