The petrographic and geochemical studies of Birimian Supergroup meta-volcanic rocks in the New Dr... more The petrographic and geochemical studies of Birimian Supergroup meta-volcanic rocks in the New Drobo environs in Ghana help to decipher the tectonic settings at the study area. Twenty thin sections were prepared with rock samples from the field at the KNUST Geological Engineering Laboratory and petrographic microscope used to determine the different types of minerals in the samples and also the rock type. Whole rock geochemical analysis was done, using both X-Ray Fluorescence and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer methods at Australian Laboratory Services in Canada. The main volcanic rock types at the study area comprise of basalt, andesite, dacite and rhyo-dacite with porphyritic mineralogical composition such as plagioclase feldspar, augite, olivine, hornblende, biotite, quartz, rutile, chlorite. Different geological structures such as shear zones, foliations, micro-faults, crack-seal events, etc. have been identified in the study area. Different phases of deformation episodes and foliation grades have been studied to determine the deformation environments. Senses of shear such as dextral, CS, and CS’ as well as antithetic and synthetic micro-faults and boudins may be identified at the north-west New Drobo. Three (3) main deformational (D) events and foliation grades (S) in both the Tarkwaian sandstones and Birimian volcanic rocks may be identified as D1, D2 and D3 as well as S1, S2 and S3. The prediction of pre-mining water quality from non-weathered sulphide ores using the Acid-Base a... more The prediction of pre-mining water quality from non-weathered sulphide ores using the Acid-Base accounting (ABA) procedure was studied at the Anglogold-Ashanti, Obuasi mine and located on the Ashanti metallogenic belt in Ghana. The purpose of the study was to establish database for use during preliminary mining project evaluation, mining project permitting, and tailings waste management planning and implementation. Total Sulphur (TS) was determined by hightemperature furnace combustion using the LECO sulphur analyzer, while carbonate was determined by gravimetric method. Average TS % and Neutralization Potential (NP) due to calcium carbonate were 1.46% and 4.34 kg CaCO 3 /ton respectively. The average TS% multiplied by the constant 31.25 yielded Maximum Potential Acidity (MPA) value of 45.63 kg CaCO 3 /ton. Paleoproterozoic sedimentary rocks associated with the Man Shield of West Africa are perceived to... more Paleoproterozoic sedimentary rocks associated with the Man Shield of West Africa are perceived to be similar, irrespective of their locality. This research seeks to establish the provenance and tectonic setting of these rocks to ascertain any such similarity perception, based on information from two localities. The study uses modal mineral estimations to reconstruct the source, paleocurrent, paleoclimate and relief of some conglomerates and sandstones from Chagupana and Tarkwa areas in Ghana. Chagupana conglomerate has igneous and metamorphic provenances, while Kawere conglomerate has metamorphic provenance. Average mineralogical composition of Chagupana sandstone is Q53-F45-R3 and classify as arkose. Tarkwa suites of Huni, Kawere and Banket sandstones are composed of Q48-F34-R18, Q51-F25-R23 and Q76-F7-R17, and classify as lithic arkose, lithic arkose-feldspathic litharenite, and sublitharenite, respectively.
