The Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation, Pastores Dabo Vobis (hereafter: PDV) is a culmination of the work of the General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops which was held in 1990. It was officially published by Pope John Paul II on March 25, 1992. The document looked at the formation of priests in the circumstances of the present day. The Synodal Fathers undertook a comprehensive treatment of priestly formation in the modern day socio-cultural and political milieu. Thus, focusing on some of the key areas of the priestly life such as the identity, spirituality, and formation of candidates for the priesthood.

Man naturally seeks that which he perceives to be good, hence would do everything to achieve it without, sometimes, giving a thought to what unintended consequences his actions might cause. Hence, he needs a holistic pattern of thought. Interestingly, Bujo remarked that the African people are characterized by this type of thinking and feeling. For the African, “there is no dichotomy between the sacred and the secular, and they regard themselves as being in close relationship with the entire cosmos.” Therefore, he realizes himself in a harmonious peaceful relationship with the minerals, plants and animals. This has some implications for ecology.
