This paper assesses the validity of China’s claims to historical legitimacy over the island territories in the South China Sea (hereafter referred to as SCS). It seeks to put forward three arguments: Firstly, China’s historical claims are not indisputable, since Southeast Asian nations can also make similar claims based on their ancient seafaring traditions. Nonetheless, China’s position is unalterable, since it is in China’s best interests to insist upon such “sovereign” claims, thereby making the SCS situation precarious and difficult to solve peacefully. Secondly, as China’s recent conduct in the SCS reflects a realist attitude, one that is based around the notions of geostrategic power politics and material interests, the US must ensure that it provides a realist response to China’s actions by striking a calculated balance between projecting a robust military presence and providing a well-measured amount of support for its regional partners. This, I contend, is the most feasible solution in maintaining the peace and security in the region. Thirdly, despite the rising tensions in the SCS, the structural nature of the US-China rivalry and the inherent friction between the two powers, there is unlikely to be a major war in the region due to the common interests of both sides in preserving regional stability.
