A chief obstacle to community development and progress in sub-Saharan Africa is persistent, wides... more A chief obstacle to community development and progress in sub-Saharan Africa is persistent, widespread, low-scale, yet catastrophic, ethnic and communal conflicts. Nigeria is no exception! Nigeria's Middle-Belt region has experienced long-standing ethno-religious and political conflict/crises. Frequent and intermittent ethnic conflicts have persisted among the various ethnic groups. This research looks at the seemingly contrasting, yet complimentary, roles of traditional and new media in ethnic conflict transformation in the area. Using a peace journalism media-ecological model that incorporates spiral of silence, priming, agenda-setting, and framing theoretical frameworks, the research analyzes the (dis)functional roles legacy and new media play in conflict exacerbation, resolution, and mediation. It employs a qualitative interpretive critical approach to examine how traditional and new media respond to ethnic conflicts in the region. It proposes a new ethic for ethnic conflict reporting, suitable for professional and citizen journalists.

Venerative speech code theory, illuminates a communication system where the speaker uses language, words, terms, or descriptions toward the other, that not only serves to identify or draw attention, but also symbolizes the worth, dignity, and esteem associated with speaker’s evaluation of the addressee and relationship. Using a geo-cultural perspective of African communalism, it posits that the way people communicate is a marker of their psycho-social environment. It extends speech codes theory from a grand theory to a grounded theory. It elaborates on how communication functions in time and place, and how it underpins the priorities and values of a cultural group. Venerative speech codes theory focuses on how African communalism informs relationships, interaction, and speech.

In post-industrial, post-structural, post-colonial, digital era, twenty-first century, what should be Africa’s development goal, and what policy paths will it take to attain such goal? These are the questions this work seeks to address. Using media ecology and cultural-critical perspectives, this research posits that the digital revolution has ushered in a new era that puts African nations at a critical intersection, forcing them to re-examine their development models and paradigms. It critiques the impact of twentieth-century colonial and neocolonial paradigms of development and development communication policies on Africa. It shows how digital media influence the capacity of different groups, agencies, and institutions to influence development agenda, policies, and practices. It examines the capacity of new media communication to both empower and disempower the ...

This study provides a historical-critical-cultural analysis of the expanding role and influence of women in Africa’s film industry, with specific examples from Nigeria’s Nollywood and Kenya’s Riverwood. The chapter looks at the global and local trends shaping gender dynamics in Nollywood and Riverwood. It highlights how changes in technology, culture, and business systems (dis)empower women professionals and practitioners in Africa’s entertainment industry. It underscores success stories while identifying the enduring challenges. Using cultural and critical-feminist perspective, the study illuminates the development potentials that would accrue to all of society from mobilizing and deploying the intellectual and creative powers of both males and females in national and international development.

These functions have been performed by traditional entertainers and performers, from ancient griots to modern media practitioners. This chapter looks at how Nollywood is continuing this tradition of balancing entertaining and emotional escape with tackling important social, cultural, political, and economic issues. Themes in Nollywood movies demonstrate that writers, producers, actors, and actresses use the medium to reach local and global audiences with prosocial entertainment. This approach to entertainment is a way of administering bitter, but necessary pills to the audience, in ways that would be unpalatable otherwise. It examines how criticisms of social ills such as corruption, domestic abuse, injustice, nepotism, etc., are conveyed in Nollywood movies. It looks at the glocal consequences...
