Patients with moderate to severe pain were treated with buprenorphine patches in one of 3 concent... more Patients with moderate to severe pain were treated with buprenorphine patches in one of 3 concentrations: 35 micrograms/h, 52.5 micrograms/h and 70 micrograms/h (= 0.8 mg/d, 1.2 mg/d and 1.6 mg/d respectively). The aim of this review was to assess the efficacy and tolerability of this transdermal system (TDS) in patients with chronic pain. A total of 445 patients were included in 3 double-blinded studies. The dosage titration with buprenorphine patches followed pretreatment with buprenorphine sublingual tablets, higher doses of weak opioids (level 2 substances), low dose morphine (level 3) or other analgesics. Patients with chronic tumour or non-tumour pain were recruited for these studies and treated with buprenorphine patches or placebo for 6 to 15 days. All patients were offered, in addition, buprenorphine sublingual tablets to be taken as required for supplementary pain relief. An intraperitoneal depot capsule was developed to improve the hitherto used in vivo test methods ... more An intraperitoneal depot capsule was developed to improve the hitherto used in vivo test methods for chronic action of water soluble substances (repeated injections or permanent infusion which immobilizes the experimental animals). The capsule allows free movement of the animal and guarantees long-term continuous output of the substance. The effectiveness of the capsule was examined using adrenaline as test substance. In these experiments the maximum period of effectiveness and the consequences of permanent occupation of the receptors due to continued supply of adrenaline were studied.

Mg++ blood concentrations were determined before and after a standard exercise of 80 watts and 8 ... more Mg++ blood concentrations were determined before and after a standard exercise of 80 watts and 8 minutes from 306, mainly male probands, which were subdivided into three groups: Group 1 consisted of probands with Mg++ concentrations of 0.45 mM/l and lower, Group 2 of those with Mg++ concentrations between 0.45 mM/l and 0.5 mM/l and Group 3 of probands with Mg values above 0.5 mM Mg/l. It turned out that in groups with lower Mg++ concentrations there was also a higher blood glucose, higher lactate, lower pH and lower buffer capacity, sometimes even before exercise. If hypomagnesemia is to be defined by concomitant worsening of the metabolism, the so called hypomagnesiemic threshold should be increased from 0.45 mM/l to 0.5 mM/l, nearly a third of the physiological range.
