Closed-loops are an important class of manufacturing systems. These systems have been analyzed by means of Markov processes models, discrete event simulation models, renewal theory and random walks. The dynamics of discrete event systems (DES) has been recently addressed with the mathematical programming technique. In particular, DESs are mapped into a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation, the optimal solution of which represents the trajectory of the DES itself, i.e. the output of a standard simulation. In this paper approximate LP-based models are developed to simulate and optimize the closed-loop system behavior. The approximation has been obtained by relaxing the constraints that keep the number of parts circulating in the system constant. In the relaxed model, the fixed population aspect, which characterize the system, is indirectly modeled by means of continuous time variables that limit the entering (leaving) of parts into (from) the system. The main advantage ...

The diffusion of the knowledge that is generated in large scale engineering projects is relevant for the success of the project itself. Indeed, a project reaches its objectives if all the results, either intermediate and final, produced during its activities are fully known, understood and exploited by all participants. However the diffusion of the new knowledge is not easy for several reasons, e.g. complexity of results, number of partners, heterogeneity of participants, etc., and a training inside the project has to be carry out to prevent a non uniform distribution of project knowledge throughout the consortium. This paper reports the experience of an integrated engineering project funded by the European Union under the VI Framework, in which eleven training courses have been designed, developed and provided to the consortium. In particular the phase of defining the courses specifications is reported, pointing out the difficulties encountered at each step.

ABSTRACT Home health care is one of the recent service systems where human resource planning has a great importance. The assignment of patients to care givers is a relevant issue that the home health care service provider must address before generating the daily routes. The assignment decision is typically made without knowing the visiting sequence, which creates some uncertainties and disparities regarding the effective workload of care givers. However, taking into account travel times in the care giver workload while solving the assignment problem is not straightforward, because travel times can also be affected by clinical conditions of patients and their homes. Providing good travel time estimates that would be used in the assignment decision is the specific topic this paper focuses on. In particular, we propose a data-driven method to estimate the travel times of care givers in the assignment problem when their routes are not available yet. The method, based on the Kernel regression technique, uses the travel times observed from previous periods to estimate the time necessary for visiting a set of patients located in specific geographical locations. The main advantage offered by this technique is the empirical modelling of the travel routes generated by care givers. Numerical results based on realistic problem instances indicate that the proposed estimation method performs better than the average value and k-nearest neighbor search methods and can be successfully used in a two-stage approach that first assigns patients to care givers and then defines their routes.

ABSTRACT Health services provided at home are becoming more important in most European countries. A better understanding of the specificities of home care (HC) operations and their management is therefore necessary. The importance of operations management for HC is obvious; such systems are faced with a growing demand for care and higher expectations for improved service delivery with more and more constraints on available budget and resources. Based on interviews of HC practices in France and Italy as well as an international review of the literature related to HC operations, this paper aims at contributing to a better characterisation of HC operations and the associated decision-making models. The main part of the presentation is made at a generic level and the paper includes also a more specific part on the chemotherapy at home process. We also provide a discussion on the most relevant research topics in the field of HC operations management.

System capacity expansion is a strategic decision that firms have to face after the design of the system and during its running. In particular, the sector of hi-tech manufacturing is affected by unpredictable changes of part types and volume demand, which are difficult to formalize and estimate. In fact, it is difficult to forecast births and deaths of products, increasing

Investment in Advanced Manufacturing Systems has a strategic impact that can affect the long term competitiveness of enterprises improving the ability of firms to create new markets, introduce new products, and to react quickly and effectively to competitors. Since the available methodologies to support strategic decisions are not easily applied, firms are in the unpleasant position of evaluating strategic decisions

ABSTRACT Energy saving in production plants is becoming more and more relevant due to the pressure from governments to contain the environmental impact of manufacturing and from companies to reduce costs. One of the measures for saving energy is the implementation of control strategies that reduce energy consumption during the machine idle periods. This paper proposes a framework that integrates different control policies for switching the machine off when production is not critical and on when the part flow has to be resumed. A general policy is formalized by modelling explicitly the energy consumed at each machine state. The policy parameters that minimize the requested machine expected energy are provided analytically for general distributions. Numerical results are based on data acquired with dedicated experimental measurements on a real machining centre, and a comparison with the most common practices in manufacturing is also reported.
