Utilizamos a México como caso de estudio para: i) desarrollar Un marco espacial socio-ecológico, las socio-ecorregiones, ii) describir los patrones resultantes, y iii) explorar cómo este marco podría ser usado para el diseño de políticas hacia la sustentabilidad. Usamos las ecorregiones y el Índice de Desarrollo Humano para construir las socio-ecorregiones. Mostramos cómo el marco socio-eco-regiones refleja la heterogeneidad ecológica y social del país. Este marco resulta ser útil para diseñar políticas socio-ecológicas. A risk communication program (RC) focused on children exposed to Pb and As in the mining area of ... more A risk communication program (RC) focused on children exposed to Pb and As in the mining area of Villa de la PazMatehuala, was designed, implemented and evaluated. The RC program was designed and applied to 142 children (5 to 12 years) of the mining area. The evaluation was done by using drawings, questionnaires and biological monitoring of lead in blood (PbB) and urinary arsenic (AsU). The drawings and questionnaires applied to the children and their parents showed learning and change in perception of risk and behavior with regard to contamination. There was a statistical significant decrease in the levels of PbB in most children (p < 0.001), but not in levels of AsU. The program partially reduced Pb exposure change and the people's perception to contamination was changed. This work establishes basis for using this kind of programs in contaminated sites.

Inspira a la propuesta de muchos tratados y acuerdos para la protección de especies, protección de la capa de ozono, cambio climático, pérdida de biodiversidad y la prohibición de compuestos orgánicos persistentes.

Many people would be increasingly affected by living under critical conditions in Latin America i... more Many people would be increasingly affected by living under critical conditions in Latin America if, as expected, global warming aggravates disease and pest transmission processes. Heat waves and air pollution would increase heat-related diseases and illness episodes in large cities. Fire smoke has been associated with irritation of the throat, lung and eyes, and respiratory problems. Climate extreme increases associated with climate change would cause physical damage, population displacement, and adverse effects on food production, freshwater availability and quality. It would also increase the risks of infectious and vector-borne diseases. Climate change impacts the geographical range, seasonality, and the incidence rate of vector-borne diseases, such as malaria. Climate-related ecological changes may expand cholera transmission, particularly among populations in low-laying tropical coastal areas. El Niño conditions may affect the incidence of infectious diseases, such as malaria. Ocean warming would increase temperature-sensitive toxins produced by phytoplankton, which could cause more frequent contamination of seafood. A clearer understanding on the current role of climate change in disease patterns will be able to improve forecasts of potential future impacts of projected climate change and support action to reduce such impacts.
