In the former Augustinian monastery of St. Jerome in Rijeka, MartinRaunacher had a built around year 1450 the chapel of St. Trinity as a final resting place for himself and his wife Margaret Lamberger. In addition to the rich sculptural decoration of the chapel, its vault is decorated with wall paintings immediately after the construction of the chapel.
In the central panels of the sanctuary part of the vault are placed anthropomorphic depictions of the sun and the moon, and in the adjacent fields four medallions in which naked human figures ride four different animals: a boar, an eagle, a dragon and a fish. They represent four elements - earth (terra), air (aer), fire (ignis) and water (aqua), which is confirmed by the remains of latin inscriptions on scrolls held by riders.
This paper offers an interpretation that the symbols of the four elements combined with anthropomorphic representations of the sun and moon is a meaningful topological system that has its roots in antiquity. In the Middle Ages it was ubiquitous through the circular diagram homo-annus-mundus. Iconographic scheme of wall paintings is a reduced cosmological picture of the world, which corresponds to the remaining iconographic content of the vault, thus Christianizing and adapting it for the medieval observer.
With their unique iconography, these wall paintings go beyond the significance of a national monument, and the community that inherits them have to get used to the exclusivity of their content.

Kuzme i Damjana u Fažani. Kuzmi i Damjanu.
