Nayeem Asif has obtained his Ph. D. from Universiti Putra Malaysia. His field of expertise is spatial analysis in built environment and also history and theory of architecture. Nayeem is currently working on assessing the spatial performance of urban mosques in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

overall issues of industrialization. Considering the challenges related to rapid urban growth, public
institutions, such as mosque and its compatibility is required to be assessed in the context of compact cities.
This study, therefore, aims to evaluate the planning and layout of six different styles of mosque in Malaysia
regarding their suitability in compact urban settings. Due to its genre, the study adopts a case study as a
qualitative research strategy as its research method. Content analysis is conducted on the compiled literature
to indicate the expected outcome. Following a brief comparative discussion, this paper shows that mosque
with modern architectural style among all six typologies is most suitable in the context of compact urban
settings. Factors considered for the evaluation of mosques include layout progression of the mosque
whether horizontal or vertical, provision for vertical stacking of spaces, symmetry in topology as well as in
elevation and space types regarding flexible usage. The scope of this paper is limited to the assessment of
literature only, which opens the window for a further in-depth study of actual case studies related to this
topic
as countries where Muslims are minority. For most of the cases in Muslim major countries, there are more than
one mosque to be found in any locality. In contemporary world, where environmental issues are given high
priority, identifying sustainable approach for designing mosques are strongly recommended. This paper aims to
analyze the principles of Islamic teachings toward attaining a balanced built environment and its implication on
developing a sustainable language for mosque architecture in contemporary world. It analyzes the indigenous
characteristics of the Prophet's (pbuh) mosque and draws lessons from therein. It also presents discussion on the
contemporary Polder Mosque in Netherlands and its innovative sustainable features. Recommendations are
made consequently regarding sustainable approach of mosque design in the contemporary world at the end of
this paper.

to fulfil their role and lost their impact on the Muslim communities around the globe.

mosque from its original idea, this paper aims to review the early Islamic texts i.e. the
perspective of Quran, Hadith and texts of the early scholars to propose a template for
contemporary mosques based on its original concept and value.
