The book investigates major currents of Modern Orthodox theology, including its use of patristic theology and tradition. Starting with the Neo-patristic synthesis, it shows other complementary ways of appropriating the mind of the Fathers, such as Hesychasm, Slavophilism, and Sophiology.

The story of Orthodox Christianity's relationship with the West plays a pivotal role in the construction of Orthodox identity. That story took a decisive turn in the 20th century. Suddenly, Orthodox thinkers, particularly those from the former Russian Empire, found themselves living in foreign lands and looking at Orthodoxy through the other end of the looking glass - the West. It was from there that Orthodox theologians were faced with the greatest challenge to their collective religious identity: What did it mean to be Eastern Orthodox outside of the East?

It is in Czech. English and Russian translations are fortcoming.

The book investigates how Orthodoxy got the the West thanks to the fisrt missions but then especially due to the forced emigration of hunderds of thousands of believers. It aslks how the Orthodox theology in the West worked with the Byzantine but also Russian and Ottoman heritage in the West nd how in this setting new themes were born.

I had gained a BS/MS and PhD (Science) from Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics, in what then was the Soviet Union. I became a scientific researcher, senior research fellow and finally the head of a laboratory at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences as well as a lecturer, and docent, at the University of Sofia in the field of applied mechanics and robotics. In the estimation of others, I was considered to be a promising researcher in the field of hard science.

The line of argument in this essay acknowledges that every scholar comes to her or his research project as a human being - a human character with its set of convictions. Human rationality therefore is not an independent faculty and cannot be divorced of human convictions. Taking a lead from the author’s reflections on his personal experience facing moral challenges in constituting the field of bio-mechatronic research, the paper presents an algorithm of analysis of complex holistic arguments. Particular attention is paid to the study of the logical structure of an argument. However, based on the most recent advances in the development of philosophical theology, in particular the emergence of narrative and contextual philosophies, the claim of the paper is that rationality of an argument, most of the time implicitly, supervenes on a scholar’s convictions. The claim is equally valid both at the stage of the development of an argument and at the stage of the assessment and critical eva...

Taking a lead from tragic experiences in Slavic-speaking immigrant communities in the United States, the authors take a closer look at the historical background and theological presuppositions underlying the social passivity of post-Soviet evangelicals. Its roots are found in the seclusion of their communal life under the suppression of religious communities by the Soviet government. Using insights from the theological tradition of the Radical Reformation, current attitudes and forms of Christian living of the evangelical communities in the former Soviet Union are defined in terms of convictions and beliefs. An attempt is made at a holistic assessment of the resources needed to change the existing attitude toward social involvement. The resources are sought in the wider Christian tradition, as well as in the practice of the Sermon on the Mount. Social involvement is understood by the authors as a wider set of practices including presence, involvement, and extension of fellowship to ...

ABSTRACT Robots with variable mechanical impedance with drives redundancy are considered. The authors analyze the structure and the principles of synthesis of such robots with respect to their kinematic diagrams with controlled bizonal gearing, coordinate electromechanical drive control and controlled accommodation approach under undetermined technological effects. Three usages of robots with variable mechanical impedance are discussed. The experimental results illustrate the capability of these robots to realize precise motion, irrespectively of the changes in the forces of the technological interaction

ABSTRACT The paper presents a comparison of the Boundary Element Method (BEM) and the Finite Element Method (FEM) for three-dimensional elasticity being determined. Certain applications to the gear teeth stress analysis are discussed. The basic equations of both methods are deduced. An approach to their joint application is given. Some numerical experiments are carried out for a computation research of the gear stresses. The power of the BEM, FEM and joint BEM-FEM are compared in such a case. The obtained results are analysed and some BEM-FEM fields of applications in the gear stress investigation are discussed briefly.
