T. triangulare leaf powder at 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 3.0% concentrations were fed to Clarias gariepinus juveniles (n=84; 117.3 ± 1.57 g; 26.70 ± 0.26 cm) as feed additive for a period of six (6) weeks. The packed cell volume (PCV) and Haemoglobin (Hb) concentration values, 34.67 ± 0.67%, 12.03 ± 0.26g/dl, respectively observed in the group fed with 1.0% were significantly higher (P<0.05) compare with the control group. Red blood cell counts (RBCs), white blood cell counts (WBCs), lymphocytes, MCV, MCH and MCHC recorded were marginally different (P>0.05) among the groups, were within standard for Clarias gariepinus, therefore adjudged not to indicate a negative physiological effect on the experimental fish. As part of the very important infectious agents known to cause high morbidity and mortality across several fish species is Edwardsiella tarda. E. tarda is directly associated with enteric septicemia in several fish species and ages. Infections caused by this bacterium is usually presented as gastrointestinal (gastroenteritis) and extra-intestinal (myonecrosis, bacteremia and septic arthritis) infections. The abundance and intensity of the parasite on the skin and within viscera of cultured O. niloticus was closely correlated while intensity was independent of prevalence at 0.05 significance level. C. tilapiae hitherto associated with wild fish species is now well recognized in cultural systems and may pose both economic and public health risks in these areas. Therefore, it is essential to identify the trends of AMR in fish and poultry and develop better surveillance strategies for the future. Despite this imperative need, such information is not well documented, especially in Africa. This study used a systematic review to assess AMR trend, spatial distribution, and incidence in fish and poultry research in Nigeria, Egypt, and South Africa. A literature assessment was conducted for published studies on AMR between 1989 and 2021 using the Scopus and Web of Science databases. In the present work hematologic indices (RBC, WBC, Ht, Hb, MCV, MCH, MCHC), were determined using standard methods. The mean ± SEM and range were established. RBC, Hb, lymphocyte and MCV differs significantly between the Bagrid catfish and the African catfish.

A replicated treatment of ten fish per group were fed three species of aquatic weed, namely Azolla filiculoides (water fern), Elodea sp. (pond weed), Pistia stratiotes (water lettuce) and the control (fed compounded diet) to determine the part of the weeds, which will be selectively consumed. The selectivity was assessed and based on the rate of consumption of the weeds for food and the parts of the plants utilized and the crude protein level of the fish after the experiment. The growth rate of the different treatment groups was also monitored. Azolla filiculoides was the most consumed, the entire plant was utilized followed by Elodea sp., although only the leaves were utilized and Pistia stratiotes was the least consumed and the fishes utilized only the roots. The mean concentration of each heavy metal in prawn specimens and water samples and the bioconcentration factor were determined. The mean concentrations of the metals in prawn specimens were in the order of Mn; 69.36 ± 78.53mg/kg > Zn; 52.88 ± 4.01mg/kg > Cu; 54.82 ± 13.88mg/kg > Pb; 9.18 ± 7.18mg/kg > Cd; 0.83 ± 0.20mg/kg . The mean concentrations of Mn, Cu and Pb in prawn specimens were above the maximum limits recommended by WHO. While level of Zn was lower than the WHO and FAO limits, the level of Cd was similar to WHO and FAO limits. The mean concentrations of the metals in water samples were within the limits recommended by WHO and FEPA.
