The text deals with the much debated question of renewal in contemporary Orthodox Christian architecture, a question that accompanied a wave of more than twenty years of building new churches in existing cities and villages in Romania after the fall of communism in 1989. Should they follow the post Vatican II trend of aggiornamento in Catholic architecture and update the traditional and regional building models? The answer the text offers tentatively is retrofuturism, a radical way of renewing the language of sacred spaces within the core prescriptions of tradition. In the process, the author gives two examples of how this might work.

The text works on time representation in architecture, arguing in favor of the building-as-process attitude towards construction, as a way to incorporate time into the making and the unmaking of edifices. The phenomenology of composing and decomposing the built matter comes into being—with a whole range of procedures explained in the text—as a way to give time to our lives and places them as co-present archives against the background of the time–space continuum, which, in its turn, becomes visible when built into architecture.

The concept of reality (haqiqa) stands at the very center of Sufism. Moslem mystics are identified as a community capable of devoting its spiritual power to the progress along the Way to God. Personal accomplishment along the Way consists in the effort directed towards the intellectual assimilation of the so called “alchemy of happiness” or kimiya‘e saadat (cf. Ahmad Al-Ghazzali): the experience of existence defined as an invisible and infinite space inhabited by the Presence of Al-Haqq, the True God, the True and Real God, the Real One (cf. Nwyia, Exégèse, pp. 1-3). Al-Haqq represents the Divine Sun of the Unseen Realm, the Center of religious and existential reality, the Pole of the Real Space, susceptible to radiate reality, existence and truth to the complex hierarchy of the beings situated in close or far proximity. Consequently, the realm of the seen and materiality becomes, from this perspective, a mere illusion of exiguity and suffering, a meaningless space governed by sin a...

Published by [KSA:K] - Center for Contemporary Art, Chisinau.

The publication is an invitation to a virtual tour through a number of historical periods and political regimes that have shaped the city and the society and includes the contributions of theorists and the artists’ projects. While the theoretical contributions present the results of historical research and case studies concerning the various stages in the evolution of the city of Chisinau, the artists’ projects have followed to a great extent the logic of subverting and challenging the order established in the urban space by the state institutions in cooperation with the private sector. Finally, the project aim was not only to identify the decisive factors that have shaped the public and urban space in Chisinau throughout history, but also to see these spaces in confrontation with the political and cultural processes and factors identified today.
