For differing reasons both Bergson and Simondon may be called philosophers of becoming. Our aim in this article is to bring to light by means of a comparative analysis of their thought the capital question of the individual and the genre, both rethought from their genesis, both on the physical level and on the level of relations between physics and biology. The problem of the genus and of the individual always appears in scientific research and especially in systems of classification in biology, although the present state of the natural sciences does not provide us yet with a definitive clarification. Bergson and Simondon basing themselves, one on the biological model [differentiation], the other on the physical model [individuation] attempt, each in their original way, to give a metaphysical interpretation of the genesis of the individual and of the genus (transl. J. Dudley).

Il est bien connu que la philosophie de Bergson procède par dichotomies originales. Mais impliquent-elles le dualisme ? Sur ce problème, Deleuze jette une lumière nouvelle dans son petit livre le Bergsonisme en analysant d'une manière brève et géniale ses œuvres principales. Mais c'est surtout dans l'article sur la différence chez Bergson qu'il découvre la clé. La différence et la différenciation sont les notions fondamentales pour son interprétation de Bergson. Il est vrai que son interprétation n'est pas sans ambigüité, d'autant qu'il nous donne l'impression de l'avoir faite pour élaborer sa propre philosophie. En effet, c'est dans Différence et répétition que sa philosophie de la différence s'établit clairement. Pourtant comme il est également vrai qu’elle procède de l'inspiration profonde de Bergson, on peut à bon droit se demander ce qu'il y a de proprement bergsonien ou non à l’intérieur de celle-ci. Nous mettrons successivement l’accent sur quatre points essentiels.

RÉSUMÉ : Cet article met l'accent sur la notion de création, entendue comme cercle vertueux dans l'oeuvre de Bergson. La fi gure du cercle vertueux désigne un processus qui tire de soi rétrospectivement son identité à travers les événements présents. Nous montrerons que ce schème est à l'oeuvre dans l'acte libre, puis dans l'action des vivants, et surtout au niveau du processus évolutif lui-même. Nous verrons ensuite s'il est possible d'élargir la perspective au-delà de ce schème traditionnel amené par le spiritualisme bergsonien. Nous montrerons que, contrai-rement à ce que souhaitait Bergson, nous pouvons en élargir l'extension au monde matériel lui-même.
ABSTRACT: In this paper, I focus on the notion of creation in Bergson's works, and I characterize it as a virtuous circle. The pattern of the virtuous circle displays a process that retrospectively fi nds its identity in itself through present events. I show that this pattern is at work in the free act, in the actions of living organisms, and mostly in the evolutionary process itself. I then move on to ask weather it is possible to broaden the perspective beyond the traditional pattern associated with Bergson's spiritualism. I show that, contrary to what Bergson envisioned, this virtuous circle can be broadened as to include even the material world.
