The meaning and content of expression in arts start changing in the twentieth century. Prior to this change, expression bore an intense relation with representation in arts. Describing a subject by creating an image or a form and presenting it was a phenomenon that defined expression. In time, however, various criticisms were voiced about the traditions invented in the field of arts with the purpose of changing its structure. Through the criticisms towards the components forming the structure of painting and sculpture, the relation between representation of the object and the narrativity established through the created representation started changing in these disciplines. Classical representation was eliminated with the rejection of perspective creating an illusive optical space in painting together with the form becoming discussible on the same level as the surface.
