The changing situation of contemporary Sweden means that the time is ripe to make a self-critical appraisal of the state of Sweden today. In six chapters, renowned Swedish scholars from film studies, literary studies, political science, religious studies, and theology give their interpretations of sin, culture, health, politics, and religion in contemporary Sweden, with a particular focus upon its cultural representation in popular media. This book will serve as a background of much of the contemporary boom of Swedish fiction, both in popular literature as well as on the silver screen.

Among the most surprising developments in this renewal is its extensive interest in religion and theology. Showing that their theological choices have profound implications for their political conceptions, Sigurdson suggests that Marxism and theology has a common ground in the urgency of the question of hope

Interpretations of the body have always been contested, both in the history of philosophy and in the history of religions. On the one hand, the body has been perceived as a prison, binding the soul to transience, darkness, and confusion. Yet on the other hand, it has itself been controlled and disciplined by reason and will, law and culture. The ten contributors to The Body Unbound suggest that inquiries into the nature of human embodiment must take into account both context and history in order to scrutinize them and to uncover resources for unbinding a body which has been doubly bound.

This question is not just theoretical but also practical, not just conceptual but also existential, not just philosophical but also a question for architecture. In this article I will explore the relationship between spatiality and embodiment with the help of architecture and phenomenology. As the question about the relationship is both theoretical and practical, both conceptual and existential, I want to do justice to these dimensions to some extent through moving between, first, the imagery of architecture, second, the conceptuality of phenomenology, particularly how spatiality and embodiment relate to the concept of atmosphere, and third, some studies in the theory of architecture. Thus, this article is an explorative interpretation with the aim of articulating how the relationship between spatiality and embodiment could be understood in a way that is comprehensive, clarifying, and existentially relevant

If so, would a Christian body be a sexed body? And would a theological notion of embodiment have something to contribute to the ongoing philosophical discussion of the body, especially in feminist theory? The answer to all three questions is yes, and Sigurdson then shows how a Christian theology of embodiment takes its cue from the doctrine of incarnation. He develops this further through examples from the history of theology on how the body has been thematized in its existential, social and gendered dimensions: the apostle Paul as not concerned with a dualistic conception of soul and body but with the finiteness and fallibility of the body; patristic and medieval theology as understanding the body as both social and transgressive; medieval women mystics as developing a sense of embodiment as a direct communion with the divine through the suffering Christ. This does ...

Taking my cue from the multidimensionality of health – refer- ring to contemporary experience, the WHO definition of health as well as pre-modern conceptions of health – I compare existential health to other concepts of health – i.e. physical, mental, social and spiritual. I argue that existential health should not be seen as yet another dimension of health – not even spiritual health, the most likely candidate as Valerie DeMarinis and Cecilia Melder, two prominent Swedish psycho- logists of religion, has argued – but rather is a reflexive expe- rience of health. By »reflexive« I mean an intentional relation to one’s own experience of ailment and health, including a relation to these experiences as one’s own. My conclusion is that existential health as a concept should be reserved for this reflexive feature of human subjectivity in relation to health, cutting ...

As Marxists, whatever else their agendas might be, it could be argued that such a critique has a prominent place in their respective theories, as far as the aim of these theories is emancipation and not, primarily at least, theoretical investigation. Thus, to get a hold on how they regard the critique of ideology will help me to put their use of theology in a proper perspective, as this use, as will be shown throughout this book, is intimately connected to the vital questions of how to achieve human emancipation as well as what a legitimate hope would mean. I shall here introduce a structure of my book that, more or less, will be repeated in the coming chapters, beginning with a short introduction to the key concept itself, moving on to Eagleton’s and Žižek’s respective views on the matter, and then ending with a comparative critical discuss...
The difference between Eagleton and Žižek that came out in the previous chapter could be understo... more The difference between Eagleton and Žižek that came out in the previous chapter could be understood as a version of the perennial Christian problem of how to live “in the world but not of it” (cf. Jn 17)—the “world” here, in Johannine fashion, denoting not the entire created world, the “universe,” but rather the fallen, human world characterized by pride and greed. Christianity through the ages has, for most of the time and to various extent of success, tried to keep a balance between the understanding of the world as the good creation of God and of the world as alienated from God, neither denying the one nor the other. To live “in the world but not of it” is a life lived according to the original intention of the creation rather than according to its current, fallen state. It is easy to see that a similar structure— especially between authentic freedom and alienation—is to be found in any political philosophy that has an idea of a radically transformed world somehow being possible....

Especially, I find his strong emphasis on the disjunction between the state before and after the radical event implies a radical discontinuity between the present state and the state of emancipation, that the possibility falls away of any kind of criteria for a useful distinction between authentic and inauthentic events. Such a lack of a more developed hermeneutics of discernment opens up for a potential ‘decisionism’ in Žižek’s work despite itself; decisionism in the sense of the evental decision itself provides the criteria for what counts as a legitimate emancipation rather than any preconceived criteria.

Even today, some kind of faith—not necessarily a religious faith—is necessary to human interaction, which is clear as the term has connotations that stretch far beyond any particular religious affiliation. The semantic field of faith is neighbor with the semantic fields of other terms such as belief, courage, hope, or trust. In fact, to both Eagleton and Žižek, faith is of vital political importance, even in its more religious connotations. This chapter will explore why and how that is. But what is faith? A preliminary answer to that question, a kind of conceptual definition, would be helpful to try to understand what Eagleton and Žižek mean by faith and how their respective understanding differ—if they do—from a traditional theological understanding.

For my analysis of “territory” as an ideological notion and for a more productive understanding of what I call “existential space”, I refer to contemporary spatial theory in philosophy. The object of study is several paragraphs in the statutes of the Church of Sweden. Several empirical examples – the suburban areas of Rosengård and Flemingsberg – help to further the analysis and substantiate my theoretical argument. Finally, I offer some thoughts toward a more constructive theology of space than that provided by the territorial understanding of the parish. Although concerned with ...

Presenting his constructive contributions to theology in relation to both historical and contemporary conceptions of the body, Sigurdson begins by investigating the anthropological implications of the doctrine of the incarnation. He then delves into the concept of the gaze and discusses a specifically Christian "gaze of faith" that focuses on God embodied in Jesus. Finally, he brings everything together to present a contemporary Christian theology of embodiment.
This profound engagement with the whole history of Christian life and thought not only elucidates the spectrum of Christian perspectives on the body but also models a way of thinking historically and systematically that other theologians will find stimulating and challenging.
The book addresses fundamental issues including:
* What do the terms ‘culture’ and ‘health’ actually mean?
* How has the field emerged in Sweden?
* How can we research Culture and Health?
* Can we avoid an instrumentalisation of art – and should we?
Culture and Health: A Wider Perspective also provides a detailed introduction to two central, international research directions: ‘arts and health’ and the ‘medical humanities’. As well, the book sketches the diversity of research perspectives in the field at the University of Gothenburg.
Culture and Health: A Wider Perspective is at once an accessible and in-depth introduction to the field with many approaches. Directed at researchers, students, policymakers and practitioners, the book is an important resource for future study and practical work.
