This study examines how an artist construed himself as cultural heritage by the turn of the 19th ... more This study examines how an artist construed himself as cultural heritage by the turn of the 19th century, how this heritage was further construed after his death, and how the artworks can be made to further new approaches and insights through a digital archive (aroseniusarchive.se). The study employs the concept of 'staging' to capture the means used by the artist, as well as by reception, in this construal. The question of 'staging' involves not only how the artist has been called forth from the archives, but also how the artist can be called forth in new ways today through digitization. The study first elaborates on the theoretical framework through the aspects of mediation and agency, then explores how the artist was staged after his death. Finally, the artist's own means of staging himself are explored. Swedish painter Ivar Arosenius (1878–1909) is the case studied.

The history of textual criticism is intimately entangled with the history of translation in sever... more The history of textual criticism is intimately entangled with the history of translation in several ways, and in the intersections, philological practice can encounter competing arguments not least concerning worldview and dogma. One well-known example is that of the apostle Junia of Romans 16:7, who in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was transformed into the male apostle Junias in many translations and editions. As solid philological arguments for this emendation were lacking, Junia was gradually regendered as a woman toward the end of the twentieth century. This development is an example of the dominance of translation practice over philological analysis and actualizes issues of the institutional development of philology, biblical criticism, and notions of gender. The treatment of Junia differed in the Protestant tradition. In his first translation of the New Testament in 1522, Martin Luther had already made the apostle masculine. However, the Scandinavian translations directly descending from Luther’s translation treated the apostle’s gender in different ways. Here, we first address the general institutional development and then consider the negotiations of textual authority, philological practice, and ideological conviction in the Scandinavian Bible translations.
What processes are involved in translating a physical archive into a digital? Can we give body, c... more What processes are involved in translating a physical archive into a digital? Can we give body, context, and affect back to a digitized material? These are questions we investigate through a three-year project about Ivar Arosenius, a Swedish artist and writer who met an untimely death in early 1909, only 30 years of age and within months of his big breakthrough. During the subsequent years and decades, his substantial production earned him recognition posthumously both nationally and internationally, and today he is one of the most renowned Swedish artists. The project has instigated a number of studies of what knowledge and aspects can be added through different technological developments, as well as what knowledge and values are lost or threatened in a digitization process. In parallel to our work with staging the artist from the archives, we study how previous stagings – exhibitions, books, studies – have mediated and affected the image of Ivar Arosenius.
