Remove the code responsible for handling variants via injecting them into tags. This is in preparation for a new logic that is going to handle variants more explicitly.

Here's my work-in-progress towards updating pip for our API changes. So far it's just one huge hack to get it installing again, I'll proceed from this to new cleaner approach.
