Stochastic Strategies for Public Transport Journeys Based on Realtime Delay Predictions (StoSt)

This project aims to provide an implementation of an algorithm for stochastic journey planning for public transport. It relies on the delay distributions obtained from public-transport-statistics and is a dependency of time-space-train-planner, which provides the UI and middleware. It uses nigiri for the loading of GTFS(-RT) data.

Using the delay distributions and cancellation probabilities and a scheduled timetable (GTFS) with realtime delay predictions (GTFS-RT), the algorithm calculates entire destination arrival distributions for a user query from origin to destination. For an intuitive understanding, best see the prototype in conjunction with time-space-train-planner surfacing the resulting histograms at https://tespace.traines.eu.

The main algorithm is located in src/query/topocsa.rs. It also contains the preprocessing/DFS part that is independent from queries and should run as soon as new realtime data is available, but can also run on the fly with the query, given that the instance is not too big. Furthermore, this contains logic for obtaining relevant stops and relevant connections from a query result (see "relevant stops approach" below). Many important utilities, like the handling of the distributions themselves, of GTFS, and of walking connections (see "walking" below), are located in the top src/ directory. For more insight on other integral parts of the code base, refer to the "Using StoSt" section below.

Building StoSt

  1. Clone this repository.
  2. Inside the created directory, clone https://github.com/traines-source/motis-nigiri-rust, so that there is a folder motis-nigiri-rust inside this repository's root. Follow the instructions over at motis-nigiri-rust to initially build the C++ dependencies.
  3. If you have glibc 2.34 on your system, you should then be able to just run cargo build to build StoSt. If you don't, you can also use Docker (recommended). In that case:
    1. Run build-docker.sh in the root of this repository (or run the contained commands manually)
    2. For subsequent runs of cargo, you can use ./run-docker.sh cargo. You may want to adapt the contained docker run command to mount the directory containing your GTFS(-RT) files.

Using StoSt

In many cases, you will want to obtain GTFS(-RT) data to load into StoSt. A number of feeds are archived at https://mirror.traines.eu. Then there are three main ways the core algorithm can be leveraged:

API Usage

StoSt exposes a Protobuf-API, which is used by time-space-train-planner. The schema definition can be found in src/wire/wire.proto. It can be used to create API consumers for the language of your choice. In order to serve the api (at port 1234), the api binary must be run. It must be given a path to a configuration JSON, like that:

./target/release/api ./deployments/config.json

This is also the default behaviour of the Docker image. In this configuration file, an arbitrary amount of systems (i.e. regions, countries...) can be specified that should be provided by the API. Two major modes exist, which are governed by the provide_timetable flag: Either the relevant timetable is provided by the caller (false), which must necessarily be a very limited timetable based on the "relevant stops approach", or StoSt itself loads the timetable from GTFS(-RT) feeds and just receives the query via the API. In particular the latter mode is very prototypical at the moment. For instance, it does not yet automatically refresh the GTFS-RT feed. For more details, see the config.json, the glue code in src/bin/api.rs and also stost.go in time-space-train-planner, which uses both modes depending on the system.

Manual Usage/Usage from Code

For experimentation with single queries, the manual integration tests in tests/gtfs.rs are helpful. They contain many examples on how to load GTFS and corresponding GTFS-RT files and running queries on them. One can run single bootstrap tests e.g. like that:

./run-docker.ign.sh cargo test --package StoSt --test gtfs --release -- gtfs_with_rt --exact --nocapture --ignored

If your GTFS(-RT) files are not located in a ../gtfs/ directory with the same substructure as https://mirror.traines.eu, you may need to manually adjust the paths in the tests. In addition, you may first need to run the create_gtfs_cache test, or only use the tests that do not rely on the cache, but reload the GTFS from scratch.

Simulation

The simulation component can be used to evaluate the algorithm in repeated runs compared to other algorithms, in particular with respect to how much earlier an actual simulated user may arrive using the StoSt algorithm. In order to run a simulation, the simulation binary must be run with a configuration file:

./target/release/simulation ./simulation/config/relevant_short_transfers_fuzzy_with_distr.json

Or, directly with Cargo and Docker:

./run-docker.sh cargo run --release --bin simulation run ./simulation/config/relevant_short_transfers_fuzzy_with_distr.json

There are many example configurations in simulation/config/, matching the source GTFS(-RT) data from https://mirror.traines.eu. After a simulation has completed, the results files can be analyzed using:

./run-docker.sh cargo run --release --bin simulation analyze ./simulation/runs/*

This will print out a variety of statistics about the run, including histograms of certain metrics. For details on the calculation and to alter the output, refer to src/bin/simulation.rs. Please get in touch if you want to obtain some example results for analysis. For creating a samples.json file containing the relations that should be simulated, the test create_simulation_samples in tests/gtfs.rs can be adapted and run.

The simulation can be used to compare against a classical, "deterministic" RAPTOR implementation from nigiri and a CSA MEAT implementation in src/query/csameat.rs (see the example configs).

Concepts

Connection

Connection in the sense of CSA, i.e. a vehicle at some point in time leaving from one stop to arrive at the very next stop.

Destination Arrival Distributions

Indicating the probabilities of all possible arrival times for each connection the user may take.

Delay Distributions

Given the currently predicted delay and other evidence for a connection, assigns probabilities of the actual final delay, and hence induces the departure and arrival distributions of a connection. Delay distributions for Germany and Switzerland are available in data/. For trying out, they can also be used for other regions, as long as the product types/transport modes/classes somewhat match. You can create your own distributions by importing historical realtime data into public-transport-statistics and exporting it similar to the SQL scripts given in data/, or just somehow create the csv file with a method of your choice.

Relevant Stops Approach

Instead of running on the full timetable, the algorithm can run only on stops relevant for the query. This enables clients to provide their own small realtime timetable that they have obtained from e.g. another API (as is the case for time-space-train-planner) or to achieve faster query running times on the GTFS timetables for repeated queries.

Walking

There are four different models of walking supported by the algorithm, hence the code contains many conditionals:

  • Contracted stops, i.e. nearby stops are grouped to one virtual stop and walking is just modelled by adjusted transfer times. This is what is always used for the simulation and for initial, full queries. This only makes sense for transitive footpaths. It imitates a user freely roaming between the contracted stops.
  • Virtual footpaths, where each stop has associated footpaths to other stops and they are taken into account on the fly during the run of the algorithm. This is currently used for API requests with provide_timetable=false, where longer, non-transitive footpaths are enriched. The virtual footpaths considerably complicate the algorithm, which is why the respective variant of the algorithm is in part completely separated from the contracted variant. The preprocessing/DFS always uses this model even when the query algorithm uses contracted stops, since it has the same effect on reachability of connections.
  • Internally materialized walking connections, i.e. walking connections that are inserted before the run of the main algorithm as if they were actual connections. They are transparent to the algorithm. They are always directly associated with an incoming connection from which the user directly starts walking, hence they get assigned the same trip id in order to achieve guaranteed "transfers" (just as if the user would stay on the same trip) and inherit their (shifted) arrival distribution. This leads to the same results as the virtual footpaths, just that the materialized connections can actually be shown in a UI.
  • Externally materialized walking connections. These footpaths may be delivered by the client calling the API for provide_timetable=false systems as part of the timetable, and they will be set to in_allowed=false by StoSt, i.e. the user can not "board" them. They can be used in conjunction with the virtual footpaths in order for a UI to be able to show physical footpaths with destination arrival distributions, since the virtual footpaths on their own do not appear anywhere. These walking connections will get assigned destination arrival distributions, but will not have any impact on the distributions of other connections, which is what the virtual footpaths are responsible for. (Otherwise, you would either get an effect of being able to "miss" footpaths, which shows in the distributions, or would have to return internally materialized walking connections to the client.)

Domination

By default, the algorithm uses fuzzy domination, i.e. a connection that leaves earlier and has a later mean destination arrival than another connection will still be somehow taken into account for the calculation of destination arrival distributions, usually yielding better results. With domination=true, strict domination is used, more similar to a classical algorithm.

Epsilon

Epsilons should basically always be used for faster runtimes and actually better results, good values are 0.01 or 0.001.

Mean Only

By default, the algorithm calculates entire destination arrival distributions for each connection. With mean_only=true, it only calculates the mean, which speeds up execution times and is in particular useful for queries on full timetables, before obtaining entire distributions just on the relevant stops.
