This also contains the typo fixes from #5106, with thanks to those reviewers. =)

@scikit-image/core if we merge this, I can tag v0.18.0rc1 which hopefully 🤞 will be v0.18.0!

(Also since it's a doc update only one +1 is needed. ;) I'll wait for at least one doc build to complete.)

Guh, so builds are failing because I changed the version tag. We really should move to setuptools_scm... Anyway, I'll merge and tag the rc because I don't see a clean way to update version tags and tests simultaneously...
