A migration to pyproject.toml seems like a good idea now :/

Looks good. +1 to moving to pyproject.toml I usually follow the suggested setuptools configuration, (https://setuptools.pypa.io/en/stable/userguide/pyproject_config.html), but my experience with this is limited.
