Feature or enhancement

Proposal:

msgfmt (under Tools/i18n) is, alongside pygettext, a very useful tool for handling translations. Unfortunately, it has some issues that make it challenging to use, for example: #85012.

I would like to help fixing these issues, however msgfmt currently has no tests. I think before we start fixing anything, we should add at least some basic tests.

Has this already been discussed elsewhere?

This is a minor feature, which does not need previous discussion elsewhere
