#Subbscribe Tumblr style opt-in popup form
Visit www.subbscribe.com for a demo or subscribe to www.1bytebeta.com for updates and announcements.
You know that nice little pop-up window that shows up when you scroll through Tumblr sites encouraging you to follow the account?
I was using MailChimp’s pop-up overlay for a while but I find it too obtrusive. It’s covering the screen and it showed as soon as someone landed on my blog, at a point which I wouldn’t expect them to subscribe anyway as they didn’t get a chance to read any of my posts.
I wanted an unobtrusive pop-up form that will invite people to subscribe to my mailing list without interfering with the overall experience or being too obscure for people to realise it’s there.
I always thought Tumblr’s ‘follow’ popup was really slick so I decided to turn it into a pop-up opt-in form. It was initially hard-coded on 1Byte Beta but the feedback was really positive so I converted it to a jQuery plugin.
It’s still early days for this project but I created a nice little landing page for it: www.subbscribe.com.
At the moment, it supports MailChimp and CampaignMonitor.
To get updates and announcements about this project, subbscribe to 1Byte Beta’s mailing-list.
I tried to keep it as light as possible. The only thing you need to is jQuery
and a MailChimp or CampaignMonitor form with the default name and email fields.
It's really easy to get started. First you need to include the required libraries at the bottom of your HTML page:
<script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script src="subbscribe.min.js"></script>
And the CSS file at the head:
<link rel="stylesheet" href="subbscribe.css" />
Then, you can initialise the plugin using the document’s body as the container, passing your list and form url parameters.
$('body').subbscribe({
list: "MailChimp",
url : "//1bytebeta.us9.list-manage.com/subscribe/post?u=1c261e60d8259c0c636801494&id=7fa99bf359"
});
The list and form’s URL are required. The plugin will log an error if they are not provided.
list
- 'MailChimp' or 'CampaignMonitor'
url
- Your MailChimp/CampaignMonitor form URL. You can get it from the form embed script under the action attribute.

- The window title.

name
- The name that will show up next to the thumbnail. This could be a link or a Twitter handle.

- A path to the thumbnail you wish to include. Make sure it’s a square as the plugin will scale it down to 40x40px
