This should get backported to master, and 0c074fc should get backported to color_overhaul.

Travis gives the all clear, though I haven't tested on numpy1.6 so I can't guarantee no more np1.6 bugs, but I can't see any on visual inspection. 0c074fc should really get backported.

See #4190 for backport of travis config to color-overhaul.

Cherry-pick had non-trivial merge so doing it as a PR.
