Some cleanup in preparation for Replication 2.0 transaction handling.

  • 🔨 Refactoring/simplification

Backports:

  • No backports required

Testing & Verification

  • This change is a trivial rework / code cleanup without any test coverage.
  • This change is already covered by existing tests
