It is not possible to predict the time and location of the next big earthquake, but the active geology of world guarantees that major damaging earthquakes will continue to occur. Scientists have estimated where large earthquakes are most likely to occur, and the probable levels of ground shaking to be expected. With these informations, as well as information on soil properties and landslide potential, it is possible to estimate earthquake risks in any given area. It is also possible to estimate the potential for earthquakes to generate tsunamis, and to model the tsunamis as a disaster [6]. Alaska has a population of approximately 710.000 and a land area of 586.400 square miles. Alaska is 1/5 of the size of the Lower 48 States, and is larger than the next three largest states (Texas, California and Montana) combined [16]. Alaska has changed significantly since the damaging 1964 earthquake, and the population has more than doubled. The Federal Emergency Management Agency estimates tha...

Soil liquefaction is the phenomenon of temporary loss of shear of saturated cohesionless soil under the influence of vibrations caused by earthquakes. The extensive loss of lives and civil infrastructure system like buildings, bridges, highways etc. caused by liquefaction emphasize the need for strong and reliable methods for evaluating the liquefaction potential of sites. Simplified techniques based on in situ testing methods are commonly used to assess seismic liquefaction potential. Many of these simplified methods are based on finding the liquefaction boundary. Because of this importance, engineers developed various software programs to evaluate and model liquefaction potentials of sites. In these programs, the methods, properties, calculation types, coefficients and etc. differs from each other. In order to address liquefaction engineering, this paper proposed to focus on comparing the advantages and disadvantages of different software programs used to evaluate and analyze liqu...

The world’s growing population needs adequate and safe homes. In order to provide and increase the number and quality of housing projects, new alternative methods need to be investigated. In this paper, the use of artificial intelligence in decision making for housing projects will be presented. The artificial intelligence tool to be utilized will be artificial neural network algorithms. The complexity of issues related to planning and design of housing projects will be simplified into social, economic, engineering, environment and safety issues. In the artificial neural network algorithm, the parameters including population, environment, distance from hospitals, distance from schools, seismicity level of district of project, climate, topography, distance from highways, financial criteria are used as input parameters. The housing project efficiency is determined by the output parameter of the algorithm. Different housing project areas’ data are used for training and testing the arti...

The natural disasters that have occurred in Turkey are categorized as % 61 earthquakes, followed by landslides, floods, rock falls, fires and storms. Between the years of 1903 and 2000, there have been nearly 150 earthquakes in Turkey which led to damage and this is a challenge for Turkey. The management and plans of these natural disasters in Turkey were first developed in 1959. In 1999, with the magnitude of 7.4, The Kocaeli and Duzce earthquakes affected a region of Turkey that constitutes % 23 of the country’s population. After that, in 2000 necessary laws have been prepared and enacted. On 23 October 2011, an earthquake shook eastern Turkey (Van Province) with a magnitude of 7.2 and same results have been seen for this disaster too. After this, the existing laws regarding disaster management and hierarchy of delegation of authority were updated. This paper examines organizational coordination in the response phase of both earthquakes. A literature research on case study earthqu...

State of 'soil liquefaction' occurs when the effective stress of soil is reduced to essentially zero, which corresponds to a complete loss of shear strength. The effects of liquefaction have long been understood, it was more thoroughly brought to the attention of engineers after the 1964 Niigata earthquake and 1964 Alaska earthquake. It was also a major factor in the destruction in San Francisco's Marina District during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and in Port of Kobe during the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake. Due to damage risks, many types of analyses have been developed by researchers. The most used ones are the simplified methods with simple equations. Nowadays, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) algorithm is used to analyze liquefaction occurrence probabilities by the researchers. Liquefaction triggering database taken from the report of Cetin et al. (2004) is arranged for 157 liquefaction cases and given in to the program. 107 of the cases are for the training and ...

Sustainable engineering approaches are a necessity for improving efficiency. For this reason, the artificial neural network (ANN) model is used to forecast different types of energy efficiency problems. In this paper, a comparison is made between a simple model based on ANN which gives meaningful findings in terms of thermodynamics and a model that is based on thermodynamic principles as auditing and predicting tool to forecast exergy efficiency of the system by applying different ANN architecture types with 441 data of experimental measurements obtained from liquefied nitrogen and analysed the Engineering Equation Solver (EES) program to make an exergy analysis.

Earthquake is one of the natural disasters that has always been of interest to researchers. It seems to be difficult to deal with an earthquake due to its accidental nature and unpredictability. Today, with the expansion of cities and the growth in their population, concerns about the increase in casualties and damages caused by the earthquake have increased. Post-earthquake management is highly dependent on predicting the amount and type of damage in any type of structure. Among these structures, little attention has been paid to infrastructures, including underground and submarine pipelines. Given the importance of these structures, research on the impact of earthquakes on these structures and their forms of damages is essential. It is also very important to predict the disaster management plan of the water supply, sewer, oil, and gas pipeline networks due to the earthquake threat. As it is known, the comprehensive approach to disaster management includes prevention (mitigation), ...

Offshore wind tribunes are becoming increasingly popular in the quest for renewable sources of energy. The planning, design, inspection, and maintenance of offshore wind farms requires careful consideration of many variables, including local climate and site conditions, economic incentives, proximity to energy loads, environmental considerations, and legal issues. The various subjects involved in the design of offshore structures include oceanography, foundation engineering, structural engineering, and marine civil engineering. The development of an offshore wind farm includes six phases: the incorporation of verification of the design basis, the preliminary design, and the final design, as well as manufacturing surveys, transport and installation, and the final in-service state. Some of the parameters affecting the projects are types of foundation, in-situ testing, laboratory testing, slope stability, earthquake stability, hydraulic stability, wind loading, wave loading and ice loa...

The development of freight villages in a given region is often viewed as a popular project in the development of a particular country's logistic plans. However, the evaluation of a freight village location among the various alternatives is a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) problem including both quantitative and qualitative criteria. Obtaining relevant geographic data is another problem for the evaluation of freight village locations. In this study, a geographic information system (GIS)-based MCDM model is proposed to evaluate potential locations for freight villages. The proposed model consists of four sequential phases. In the first phase, different geographic criteria are determined from existing literature, and data are gathered using GIS. By criteria weights equally, alternative locations are determined through GIS in the second phase. In the third phase, identified criteria are weighted using analytical network process (ANP) method by various stakeholders of potential freight villages. In the fourth phase, the “Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS)” method is applied in order to determine the best alternative based on the weighted criteria. Using real data from the city of Ankara, Turkey, we test the applicability of our evaluation approach and compare the best alternative obtained by the proposed method with the current freight village (CFV) location in Ankara.
