The topic of this paper is the historic-geographic development of the city of Osijek and its administrative boundaries. Two methodological concepts were used in researching the topic: historic and geographic. The first part of the paper deals with natural and geographic features, as well as population since the first official census in 1857. The second part deals with the historic-geographic development of the city of Osijek covering the periods from prehistory and classical antiquity, over the medieval period and the Ottoman Period, up until the modern times, focusing in particular on the period after World War II. The final chapter of the paper considers the possibilities and probability of Osijek’s future development, which demonstrate negative tendencies when it comes to the development of demographic indicators and functional organization of space.

Tema rada je historijskogeografski razvoj Osijeka u okviru njegovih administrativnih međa, a u istraživanju naslovljene teme povezuju se dva metodološka pristupa, povijesni i geografski. Prirodno-geografska obilježja te stanovništvo i naseljenost razmatraju se u prvom dijelu rada od prvog službenog popisa stanovništva 1857. godine. Drugi dio rada razmatra historijskogeografski razvoj Grada Osijeka od prapovijesti i antike, preko srednjovjekovnog razdoblja i osmanlijskih osvajanja pa sve do suvremenog doba pri čemu je veći naglasak na razdoblje nakon Drugog svjetskog rata. Rad se bavi analizom i interpretacijom kamenih grbova povijesne jezgre Šibenika iz razdoblja od 14. do kraja 16. stoljeća. Grbovi su obrađeni metodama tradicionalne heraldike i povijesti umjetnosti. Prikazani su u kontekstu vremena i prostora iz kojih potječu, što je rasvijetlilo neke aspekte njihovog uporabnog svojstva i komunikacijske uloge u društvu šibenske komune. Kao prvo, grbovi mletačkih dužnosnika i šibenskih biskupa mogu se pronaći isključivo na javnim i sakralnim građevinama šibenske komune, dok je lokalno plemstvo isticanje svojih grbova ograničilo većinom na svoje privatne posjede. Kao sredstvo komunikacije, grbovi definiraju i društveni status pojedinaca i obitelji. Monastery of St. Mary Magdalene in Porat has existed more than 500 years according to some written documents. Monks and members of RC Third Order lived there before 1480. Then a monastery was built at the place where there was originally a small chapel. About that time a part of today’s church (built in the late Gothic style) was built and shortly after that the main altar where they put a polyptych which stands there even today and which was made by venetian great painters Girolamo and Francesco da Santacroce. On the north side of the church there is St. Nicholas altar with the statues of St. Francis and St. Anthony and on the south side St. Rocco’s altar. In 1850 a big toš was made which was basically a mill and a press used for better and easier processing of olives. The toš was used not only by monastery but by the whole Porat and has been preserved up to the present day. The cellar of the monastery has been changed to a monasterial museum with the toš and other exhibits which testify about religious, cultural and economic presence of monks and of RC Third Order in Dubašnica, especially in Porat. In the Glagolitic collection of stone monuments there are copies of some of the oldest and most important Croatian Glagolitic inscriptions. The franciscan members of RC Third Order has been reading, writing and singing masses over centuries, saying offices and using Glagolitic alphabet. Numerous cultural events take place in the atrium of the monastery and inside the Church of St. Mary Magdalene as well as concerts of classical and traditional music.

From its very beginnings, the monastic religious community of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis (Tertius Ordo Regularis S. Francisci) used Old Church Slavonic and the Glagolitic alphabet in both the liturgy and everyday life. The original of the manuscript published in this book is housed in the archive of the Third Order Regular Franciscan Monastery of St. Mary Magdalene in Porat in the area of Dubašnica and its contents relate entirely to the monastery. In the Port of Dubašnica, which eventually developed into the village of Porat, and which was once a Venetian port for the export of timber, there was a small chapel before 1480. The Monastery of St. Mary Magdalene of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis was built next to this chapel. Over the centuries, many Glagolitic manuscripts were preserved in the monastery in Porat. At first, they were kept in the monastery archive, but today are housed in separate collections in the Archive of the Third Order Franciscan Provincialate in Zagreb, the archive of the HAZU Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb, and the Episcopal Archive in Ljubljana, while the location of some of the manuscripts is unknown. This is the first Glagolitic manuscript from the Porat monastery, or related to it, to be published. It is called the Inventory of the Monastery of St. Mary Magdalene in Porat and represents the list of property, or the inventory book. It was written in cursive Glagolitic, and to a lesser extent in the Latin alphabet, from 1734 to 1878 in the Third Order Regular Franciscan Monastery of St. Mary Magdalene in Porat. This inventory is a unique book of its kind in the entire Franciscan order. It gives us information about how and where the Franciscan Tertiaries in Porat used to live, how they made their living, what they produced, which books they used for prayer, what and how they ate, and where they slept. These seemingly uninteresting facts, uniformly listed for each inventory year, provide a rich basis for the reconstruction of life in the monastic community. The records are structured according to the individual areas of the life and activities of the monks: church, sacristy, kitchen, dining room, tavern, monastery, harvest, treasure. The inventory took place every few years when a new guardian was elected, who also conducted the inventory. The Inventory of the Monastery of St. Mary Magdalene in Porat on the Island of Krk (1734–1878) provides valuable information on the history of the monastic community of the Franciscan Tertiaries in Croatia, the local history of the island of Krk, and general history regarding the church, liturgy, the economy and society. This book of inventory also represents interesting material for dialectological studies, as the records, despite the fact that their vocabulary is rather limited (the phrases used are habitual and almost formulaic), provide a valuable linguistic insight into local dialects (not only of the Dubašnica area) in the 18th and 19th centuries without any admixture of artificial standard language.

After a somewhat longer period of time a new, 69th in the series, volume of Krčki zbornik (Krk Almanac) lies before its readers, this time with mixed content, i.e. as a journal/annual published by the Historical Society of the Island of Krk ever since 1970 when the first issue was printed. It should be noted that the publication as such had been regularly published in the past period, but the volumes were actually monographs written by individual authors which bore the sign of Krčki zbornik along with the indication of Special edition. The present volume is arranged in several thematic sets. The basic one is Studies and articles in which seven scientific/ original scientific papers are published (Petar Runje, Radovan Oštrić, Franjo Velčić, Danijel Ciković, Juraj Lokmer, Ljubomir Radić, Ivan Kirinčić) two of which are to be continued in the following volume. After that comes the set Materials for the history of the Croatian diaspora in the United States of America (Tomislav Galović) and Materials for the history of the Croatian War of Independence 1991-1995 (Željko Juranić). Since it was planned for 2009 to publish a separate brochure or a special edition of Krčki zbornik to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Krk Historical Society, but these plans had to be abandoned for objective reasons, therefore we bring here appended the Featured topic: 40 years of the Krk Historical Society (1969-2009) in which papers dedicated to this jubilee are included (Petar Strčić, Milan Radić, Tomislav Galović, Perica Dujmović). In the last part the reader will find the Reviews and announcements, comments and notices. Unfortunately, in this volume there is also an In memoriam section with the necrology Alojzije Ragužin – priest and writer (1915 – 2011). On this occasion we wish to thank the authorities of the local self-administration – Town of Krk, Municipality of Baška, Municipality of Dobrinj, Municipality of Malinska-Dubašnica, Municipality of Omišalj, Municipality of Punat and Municipality of Vrbnik – for their understanding and support and for having agreed to be co-publishers of Krčki zbornik thus ensuring its regular annual publication. After we successfully published the 69th volume of Krčki zbornik last year as a journal/ yearbook of the Historical Society of the Island of Krk, printed since 1970, we now present to our readers the new, 70th installment of the series.
Topically, it falls into several sets. The basic one is Studies and articles, featuring nine scientific and scholarly papers (Jelena Marohnić, Marijan Bradanović i Danijel Ciković, Petar Runje, Nina Spicijarić Paškvan, Lovorka Čoralić, Juraj Mužina, Nikola Radić, Juraj Lokmer, Ivan Kirinčić). It is followed by Materials for the history of the Krk island (Ivan Galjanić, Croatian patriots chase away Arditi units on New Year's Eve 192, ed. Marija Galjanić) and Materials for the history of the Croatian War of Independence (Petar Strčić, The island of Krk in the War of Independence as „History untold“ by Željko Drinjak).
Since, for objective reasons, we were not able to organise a round-table discussion in December 2013 on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the death of father Vinko Fugošić (1916 – 2003), it has been decided exactly for the present volume of Krčki zbornik to publish a special theme set headed by: A silent judge of art – friar Vinko Fulgencije Fugošić (Gordana Gržetić, Tomislav Galović, Perica Dujmović).
Also, after some time the section Poetry has been reintroduced which starts off with poems by Perica Dujmović, a young and award-winning writer, Vedute merging with the southwind of Plavnik. It is somewhat „a mystery“ that his name and poems were not included in the recently published Anthology of poetry on the island of Krk (2014).
In the last part of the volume one finds the customary Reviews and announcements, replies and notes as well as a Report on the activity of the Historical Society of the Island of Krk, by the President of the Society Milan Radić, Instructions for the contributors and a multi-language outline of the history of the Society, while the jacket has a list of the published volumes of Krčki zbornik and the Special editions of the Historical Society of the Island of Krk (1970 -2013), printed on the inside flaps.
Unfortunately, the present volume has to have once again the In memoriam section with four necrologies, all of them dedicated in fact, without exception, to persons closely connected with the Krk Society: friar Mavro Velnić (1919 – 2013), father friar Anđelko Badurina (1935 – 2013), Prim MSc Ivan Juranić (1939 – 2014) and friar Petar Runje (1938 – 2014).

It is with great pleasure that we present to our readers the 74th volume of Krčki zbornik of the Historical Society of the Island of Krk featuring a number of interesting studies, papers and other contributions. As always, everything has... more
It is with great pleasure that we present to our readers the 74th volume of Krčki zbornik of the Historical Society of the Island of Krk featuring a number of interesting studies, papers and other contributions. As always, everything has been arranged into sections. The Studies and articles section contains five original scientific papers. From the hand-written estate of friar Petar Runje, MA (1938-2014) the paper „First News on the Franciscans in the Town of Krk”, a part of a bigger work, has been prepared for print. A very interesting paper by Marijan Bradanović, PhD, associate professor, and Ivan Braut “The Frangipani Chapel of Krk Cathedral”, previously published in Italian in the periodical Hortus artium medievalium, follows after that. Prof. Ivan Kovačić makes us acquainted in detail with the “Activities of the Representatives of the Catholic Church in Saving Captives of the Kampor Camp on the Island of Rab in the Years 1942 – 1943“. The occasion for the paper has come from the 50th anniversary of the death of the bishop of Krk Dr Josip Srebrnić (Solkan near Nova Gorica, Slowenia, 2nd February 1876 – Krk, 21st June 1966). After a long period of time we have now again papers coming from the area of law. Branko Smerdel, PhD, full professor in permanent position and head of the Chair of Constitutional Law of the Faculty of Law of the University in Zagreb – our most distinguished expert on constitutional law, writes about the „Tasks of Jurisprudence and Legal Profession on the Occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the „Christmas Constitution“, stressing out the constitutional choice and the processes of the implementation of the highest constitutional values and strategic goals of the Republic of Croatia, whereas Duška Šarin, PhD, research associate and judge of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Croatia (2008 – 2016), deals with the „Significance and Circumstances of the Adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of Croatia”, our most important act of constituting a modern state and society.
In the Materials for the history of the Krk island section we are releasing notes and memories of Ivan Šabalja (Guštin) on the occasion of the „Folk Singers of Dubašnica 2014/15” as well as a text in the Materials for the history of the Croatian War of Independence (1991-1995) section by an immediate witness to the period in question – Mladen Juranić from Punat, president of the Executive Council of the Assembly of the Community of Krk and president of the Crisis Headquarters of the Community of Krk – under the title “From the Reminder of the Events of the Years 1990 – 1991”
The Featured topic is dedicated this time to a round table held in Malinska on 27th August 2015 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the first Croatian Constitution whose Draft was made in August 1990 just in Malinska and came therefore to be called the „Krk Constitution“. The featured topic was edited and provided with an introduction by Tomislav Galović, PhD, assistant professor, and the „Foreword: For a return to the ideals of the Krk Draft of the Christmas Constitution“ was written by Branko Smerdel, PhD, full professor, for which we thank Him most sincerely! After the foreword there comes the welcoming address by Darijo Vasilić, mayor of the Town of Krk, Robert Anton Kraljić, head of the Community of Malinska-Dubašnica and Dr Milan Radić, president of the Historical Society of the Island of Krk. After that the presentations at the round table follow with the speakers: Marina Valković, Anton Katunar, Anton Bozanić, PhD, assistant professor, Duška Šarin, PhD, Vladimir Šeks, PhD h.c.. There was a short discussion too, with Dragutin Žic, Mladen Juranić and academician Petar Strčić participating. As an Appendix to the Featured topic we find photographs from a private album of Josip Šamanić (from Sv. Vid-Miholjica) and a facsimile
of A report on the course and results of the local elections for the members of the Assembly of the Community of Krk, Krk 11th May 1990.

The end of Krčki zbornik is traditionally reserved for a report on the activity of the Historical Society of the Island of Krk in 2015 and 2016, written by Dr Milan Radić, president of the Society, and the Instructions for the contributors.

In the Materials for the history of the Krk island section we are releasing notes and memories of Ivan Šabalja (Guštin) on the occasion of the „Folk Singers of Dubašnica 2014/15” as well as a text in the Materials for the history of the Croatian War of Independence (1991-1995) section by an immediate witness to the period in question – Mladen Juranić from Punat, president of the Executive Council of the Assembly of the Community of Krk and president of the Crisis Headquarters of the Community of Krk – under the title “From the Reminder of the Events of the Years 1990 – 1991”
The Featured topic is dedicated this time to a round table held in Malinska on 27th August 2015 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the first Croatian Constitution whose Draft was made in August 1990 just in Malinska and came therefore to be called the „Krk Constitution“. The featured topic was edited and provided with an introduction by Tomislav Galović, PhD, assistant professor, and the „Foreword: For a return to the ideals of the Krk Draft of the Christmas Constitution“ was written by Branko Smerdel, PhD, full professor, for which we thank Him most sincerely! After the foreword there comes the welcoming address by Darijo Vasilić, mayor of the Town of Krk, Robert Anton Kraljić, head of the Community of Malinska-Dubašnica and Dr Milan Radić, president of the Historical Society of the Island of Krk. After that the presentations at the round table follow with the speakers: Marina Valković, Anton Katunar, Anton Bozanić, PhD, assistant professor, Duška Šarin, PhD, Vladimir Šeks, PhD h.c.. There was a short discussion too, with Dragutin Žic, Mladen Juranić and academician Petar Strčić participating. It is with great satisfaction that we present the volume 75 of Krčki zbornik
(Krk Almanac), published by the Krk Historical Society and dedicated
to this organization’s 50th anniversary (1969–2019). It contains a series of
intriguing discourses, articles and other contributions. As before, it is divided
into several units. So, in Studies and papers, we offer four scholarly
papers (Natalia Beg, The Dokulo family of Rab: on their heraldic symbol,
their connection to the island of Krk and the restoration of the chapel next to
Rab’s cathedral; Anton Bozanić, A century of administration on an island: the
island’s seat Krk, castles/municipalities, the cadastral survey and municipal
boundaries; Juraj Lokmer, John Mason Neale: Glagolitic, Glagolitic liturgy
and the island of Krk in a travelogue from 1861; Anton Bozanić, The term Boduli
– origin, meaning and appropriate contemporary use).

The Rev. Anton Bozanić, Ph.D., pastor of Omišalj and deacon of the Omišalj Deaconate, an acknowledged and well-known ecclesiastical historian of Krk who specializes in modern and contemporary Croatian history, celebrated his seventieth birthday last year (2022). Aware of this major lifetime milestone, the Krk Historical Society (of which Bozanić has long been a member) made the decision at its Annual General Meeting held in Malinska on 11 December 2021 to wholly dedicate an issue of its yearly journal, Krčki zbornik Povijesnog društva otoka Krka (as its Special Edition, vol. 66), to Anton Bozanić, Ph.D. – a distinguished member of the Krk Historical Society and a genuine promoter of the cultural and spiritual heritage of Krk. Many of the celebrant’s friends and collaborators responded to the call. The Anton Bozanić Anthology begins with words of welcome in the form of Forewords, written by Msgr. Valter Župan, the retired bishop of Krk, and the Editorial Board of Krčki zbornik. The Anton Bozanić Anthology contains two units under the titles: Vita et opera and Studia in honorem Antonii Bozanić. The first unit contains a biography (curriculum vitae) of and a list of books, studies and articles (bibliographia) by Anton Bozanić, Ph.D. This is followed by a series of papers that examine and illuminate for readers various segments of his life and work. Thus, Dina Valković wrote about the newspaper/magazine Vrbnički vidici and Anton Bozanić’s role in launching it. Ksenija Čulina and Josip Žgaljić inform readers of the three decades of collaboration between Anton Bozanić and the publisher Glosa d.o.o. from Rijeka (1992-2022). Vesna Kukavica validates the research into Croatian émigré communities conducted by Bozanić during his stay in the United States of America (1993-1998), while in his text Julijano Sokolić presents Anton Bozanić as the “most productive writer among the priests and monks in Cres-Lošinj archipelago.” The final two papers in this unit have both documentary and literary value. Gordana Gržetić writes about some lesser known details from Vrbnik’s past under title “The Hand of Saintliness on the Wellspring of Wisdom” (Blessed Ivan Merz), while Marija Trinajstić Božić contributed her poems– Oh dear Vrbnik – in honour of our celebrant. The second unit of the Anton Bozanić Anthology contains twelve (12) scholarly and professional papers that were all written in honour of Anton Bozanić: Studia in honorem Antonii Bozanić. Fr. Ljudevit Anton Maračić (OFM Conv.) wrote about the Minorite monasteries in Kvarner and their inventories. Prof. Marijan Bradanović, PhD., familiarizes us with the cultural landscape of the Krk counts in its fundamental aspects, while Perica Dujmović takes us toward a comprehensive biography of Dobrić Dobrićević (Boninus de Boninis, 1457/1458-1528), a distinguished European printer originally from the island of Lastovo. Juraj Mužina and Prof. Sanja Zubčić, Ph.D. provide materials for the history of the old Church of St. Apollonaris in Dubašnica (1153-1834), while Prof. Marija Turk, Ph.D. presents Vrbnik native Fr. Dragutin Antun Parčić as a lexicographer and promoter of Croatian linguistic renewal. Prof. Tomislav Galović, Ph.D. writes in brief about the bishop at the turn of the century: Antun Mahnić (1850- 1920). A cultural-historical essay about the shrine dedicated to the Madonna of Gorica on the island of Krk was written by Juraj Lokmer, while Miljenko Seršić-Krala and Prof. Željko Bartulović, Ph.D. dealt with the administrative history of the Baška Municipality in the period from 1918 to 1929. John Peter Kraljic (M.A., J.D.) provided a report about the Omišaljani in New York during the 1940s and 1950s, while Željko Drinjak covered the religious order communities on the island of Krk during the Homeland War. The final two works in this section were contributed by Prof. Jerko Valković, Ph.D. (“From the common to universal common good. New priorities with regard to the common good in the Church’s social doctrine”) and the Rev. Zvonimir Badurina Dudić (“A brief overview of the Apostolic Exhortation by Pope Francis, Rejoice and Be Glad”).

In this paper the author researches medieval parishes in the Međimurje area. The paper concentrates on the 14th and the 15th century since first parishes in written documents appear in the beginning of the 14th century. The medieval Međimurje area falls under Zagreb bishopric in church organization and under Hungarian Zala county in political organization. Parishes situated in this area will be studied based on written documents, archeological findings and by analyzing priests' lives with the help of priest register. Furthermore, churches are examined with the help of analyses of art historians, as well as their location. Parishes are divided in „lowland and highland parishes“ according to their geographical characteristics. Economic aspects of particular areas are also taken into account and church organization is analyzed as well based on two registers from 1334 and 1501. This thesis attempts to outline the most relevant commonplaces and rethorical strategies used in the political languages of the British Liberals in the aforementioned period. Using the Norman Fairclough's threedimensional framework, this work initially examines political and
discursive practices and afterwards it introduces the analysis of the discourse itself. In that respect, the discourse is presented by four most relevant commonplaces: „Subject/Oppressed nationality“, „Guardians of the Gate“, „Drang nach Osten“ and „Integral victory“.
Simultaneously, each of the commonplaces is attached to the several rethorical strategies which are used to legitimise it but which also reveal the stances, assumptions and goals that British Liberals had while arguing for the Yugoslav unification and the Croatian position
within the new state. Finally, following the language analysis, the author argues that there are considerable discrepancies and problems in the relationship between the discourse (production) and the
political practice of the same historical actors. The 3 key problems outlined in that context are the secret diplomacy, the critique of German imperalism whilst non-reflecting on the British and the engagement regarding the Croatian Question during the unification and peace
settlement. The overall conclusion of this thesis is that the language of British Liberals in that period reveals that they were consciously producing a discourse about the urgent and ethical
need for Britain to help the realisation of Yugoslav unification. In doing so, they established imperial authority by monopolising knowledge production on the peoples and lands relevant for their interests combining it with the discourse about Britain's role in the history of the
