Pynchon’s novels V. , The Crying of Lot 49 and Gravity’s Rainbow contain the prominent elements of cyberpunk, such as tendency towards mechanization, integration with technology, analogy between the urban city structures and computer matrix and electronic components, dystopian environment with noticeable absence of nature and its devastation, importance of information and loss of identity. All these elements that Pynchon skilfully uses to balance on the thin line between reality and fantasy have become the typical features of cyberpunk.

Dick’s novels Ubik and The Man in the High Castle explore the idea of the multiplicity of realities, which can be understood better if interpreted from a cosmological point of view. The scientific principles of decoherence, as formulated by H. Dieter Zeh and Hugh Everett III, shed light on the nature of these fictional worlds, their creation and dissolution and their perception by both the protagonists and the reader. Ontological puzzles of the quantum world, based on the rejection of the special status of an observer in physical reality and fractal branching of the universe, offer insights into the mechanisms at work in these two novels. Decoherence may be the key to understanding the disintegrating borders between realities in both novels, which are manifested as worlds in superposition. However, the rules of this scientific principle are radically challenged by the emergence of what could be termed the agents of re-coherence. These agents reveal the existence of alterna...

This unexpected passage from one world to another also brings an unexpected switch to science fiction. Both these changes, the passage to another, radically different world and a shift to science fiction, are not so abrupt or radical as they may seem on the surface. Placing the Gothic and science fiction features into the spotlight, while not denying the existence and importance of others, can show how the reality in the trilogy is shaped, how its two worlds are connected into a whole, and how they give one another shape in the overall picture of Gormenghast. Together, they can add to the illumination of the anomaly of Mervyn Peake's story of Gormenghast.

Dick’s novel Valis across different personalities, points in time, and realities become a penetrating exploration of the very fabric of the real through his heteromorphic cosmogony that can serve as a paradigm to understanding Dick’s literary-philosophical matrix. Whether a diagnosis or a profound insight into other realities, both insanity and schizophrenia in Valis develop into a means to diagnose the nature of reality by projecting the microcosm of an individual to the macrocosm of the entire universe and vice versa. Dick’s earlier major works of fiction are reflected in Valis as is Valis reflected in them in a way that shows the line between insanity and reason, and reality and hallucinations, is not only thin but often non-existent. Unlike many who consider themselves normal, Dick never recoiled from an opportunity to embark on an exploration of other realities, both in life and in his fiction, as is evident from the close and intima...

Pinčon rekonstruiše stvarne geografske prostore fantazijama i brojnim mentalnim i kinematografskim projekcijama, kojima gradi alternativne stvarnosti, koje prožimaju stvarne geografske i imaginarne lokacije u različitim vremenskim periodima, čime anulira principe konvencionalnog, linearnog toka vremena i dimenzionalnosti prostora.

Dick’s fiction as others and as gothic doubles reveals the roots of the fear of them: they signify loss of humanity and fear of death brought about by something that is the same, thus seen as the double, yet frighteningly different, thus seen as the other. Mary Canales’s ideas of othering may be used to analyse the relationship between them; however, one needs to take into consideration their appearance and reversed roles. Visible, easily noticeable reasons for separation and stigmatization, which can be regarded as the traditional markers of otherness, are backgrounded in Dick’s fiction due to the replicants’ visible sameness with humans, whereas inauthenticity, a quality that is not visible and is very difficult to detect, is foregrounded as the principal reason for othering. Androids’ visible sameness and invisible difference, seen as unnatural, something deviating from the generally accepted idea of normality in the eyes of the majority, i.e. authentic human population, are turned into the principal generators of otherness and the triggers for exclusion.
