Understanding Feminism provides an accessible guide to one of the most important and contested ... more Understanding Feminism provides an accessible guide to one of the most important and contested movements in progressive modern thought. Presenting feminism as a dynamic, multi-faceted and adaptive movement that has evolved in response to the changing practical and theoretical problems faced by women, the authors take a problem-oriented approach that maps the complex strands of feminist thinking in relation to women’s struggles for equal recognition and rights, and freedom from oppressive constraints of sex, self-expression and autonomy. Each chapter focuses on a different cluster of concerns, demonstrating key moves in second-wave feminist thought, as well as some of the diversity in response-strategies that encompass both socio-economic and cultural-symbolic concerns. This approach not only shows how central feminist insights, theories and strategies emerge and re-emerge across different contexts, but makes clear that far from being “over”, feminism remains a vital response to the diverse issues that women (and men) find pressing and socially important.

In contrast, this author proposes that the trajectory for a post-metaphysical ethics can be traced from the work of Martin Heidegger. Despite demonstrating that certain projects of the 'Post' have reached an impasse, she argues that other such possibilities do develop an outline for an ethical 'Post' that does not collapse into paradox or remain at an impasse, further suggesting that this vision of the 'Post' holds positive significance and implications for our conceptions of ethics and ethical practice in the 21st century.
Drawing in detail on both Heidegger's oeuvre and a wide range of associated projects in contemporary continental philosophy, including phenomenology, deconstruction, pragmatism, the newer French liberalism and post-structuralist aesthetics and theology, this book delivers a convincing rebuttal of one of the more persistent arguments about post-Heideggerian philosophy and its relations to the ethical.

There is agreement between national governments, employers, and teaching practitioners and resear... more There is agreement between national governments, employers, and teaching practitioners and researchers that one of the foundational objectives of the university system is the acquisition by students of those skills and attitudes commonly grouped under the umbrella of “critical thinking”. Laurillard (1993), for example, contends: “student learning is not just about acquiring high level knowledge. The way students handle that knowledge is what really concerns academics.” That is, students need to become effective critical thinkers and successful problem-solvers able to display flexibility and adaptability in their management of workplace and social change (e.g. Candy, 2000; Moon, 2007; Treleaven & Voola, 2008).

One of the problems faced in teaching critical thinking in an online environment, is how to foste... more One of the problems faced in teaching critical thinking in an online environment, is how to foster an active engagement with materials. Without the interaction of face to face teaching, it appears to be easy for students working in an online environment, to accept materials passively - responding rather than actively engaging. Such learning is particularly counter-productive when it comes to developing skills in critical thinking, insofar as it is imperative that students not only engage actively and critically with unit materials, but interactively with other students. Furthermore, it is imperative that students recognise that such skills are not only applicable in the context of the particular unit and its requirements, but exemplify a tool of critical analysis important in both their further studies and everyday lives. The challenge as an online tutor is thus to foster in students such an active and critical engagement, with the desired outcomes being firstly students developing and honing skills in critical thinking, and secondly being able to transfer and practise these skills across a wide range of contexts.This paper documents my attempts to promote and facilitate such engagement by students in the online environment. Drawing on my experience as a successful online tutor at Curtin University, teaching the OLA unit REA11 Applied Reasoning, I will outline both some of the issues needing to be considered when teaching critical thinking skills in an online environment, and some of the strategies I have developed to best achieve the outcomes outlined above.

The question stands as to how to mobilise everyday mainstream consumers into supporting animal activism given that animal activism is presented in the public sphere as dampening the economic livelihood of Australia, with some animal activism described as ‘akin to terrorism’. The questions, then, are as follows: how to mobilise everyday mainstream consumers into supporting animal activist ideals? How to frame and communicate animal activist ideals so that they can come to inform and change the behaviour and self-understandings of mainstream consumers? The last part of the twentieth century saw an array of theses proclaiming sweeping changes in the... more The last part of the twentieth century saw an array of theses proclaiming sweeping changes in the way we understood our world, several of which proclaimed—concurrent with the end of the cold war, the fall of the Berlin wall and the apparent retreat of communism—that we had reached the ‘end of history’. This, of course, was not to be read as meaning an end of things happening (a common mistaken reading of Francis Fukuyama’s claims in The End of History and the Last Man), but rather that the apparent loss of anything to systematically challenge the western liberal democratic political system suggested that all would come to accept this system simply as the ‘solution that other people will necessarily adopt when they cease to be ‘irrational’’ (Mouffe, 2000: 65). This is, in other words, the western tradition’s assumption of the liberal democratic having become ‘coextensive with the political’ (Derrida, 2005: 28). The unpacking of these primary discursive positions will be based on an analysis of the letters to the editor published in both The Australian (Australia’s national newspaper) and The West Australian, covering one key period from 22 January to 28 February 2002 (a period encompassing the Woomera hunger strike).

Crowdfunding has become a billion dollar business for the digital platforms that enable it. Altho... more Crowdfunding has become a billion dollar business for the digital platforms that enable it. Although crowdfunding has been used for over a decade to fund a variety of artistic or entrepreneurial individual and collective projects, more recently there has been an uptake by individuals and groups wishing to effect social change. Indeed, there have been arguments that crowdfunding’s capacity to tap into personal networks and ‘like-minded’ people – via social media networks, email and the internet – is reformatting funding for social change. Insofar as crowdfunding means that there are no gatekeepers such as government or corporate policy-makers able to direct or constrain public vision of the good, supporters argue that crowdfunding democratises the achievement of social change.
