In this study, we identified 13 "Stage Magic Principles" and mapped them into design elements that we called "Design Correspondences of Stage Magic Principles" (DCSMP). We then conducted a survey with 20 participants to assess the subjective perception of 8 products without DCSMP and 8 equivalent products with DCSMP. We identified a positive correlation between the use of DCSMP in the design process and the evocation of a "magical" user experience. As an outcome of this study, we provide a list of design elements that can be used for creating a magical user experience.

Our objective is to identify design elements for creativity that are likely to generate a magical user experience. Considering that magical experiences originally stem from characteristics of stage magic performances, a conceptual analogy is thus made between product performance and stage magic performance. In this research, we identified 13 “Stage Magic Principles” and mapped them into design elements that we called “Design Correspondences of Stage Magic Principles” (DCSMP). We then conducted a survey with 20 participants to assess the subjective perception of 8 products without DCSMP and 8 equivalent products with DCSMP. We identified significant positive correlations between the use of DCSMP in the design process and the evocation of a “magical” user experience. Consequently, we validated the influence of the DCSMP framework on design creativity with a pilot experiment involving 8 designers in two ideation design sessions. The results confirmed that the DCSMP influenced the design outcome as being more novel and magical. As an outcome of this thesis, we provide a guidelines and a list of design elements that can be used as stimuli for creativity when designing for a magical user experience.
