[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle High German trūrec, from Old High German trūrag, from Proto-Germanic *dreuzagaz. Cognate with German traurig. Equivalent to Trauer + -eg. The Rheinisches Wörterbuch considers it a “loanword from written German” and, in fact, the form cannot be native in view of the initial t-. It must have been adopted relatively early on, however, perhaps as early as 1400, like Dutch treurig.
