[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle High German rīten, from Old High German rītan, from Proto-West Germanic *rīdan, from Proto-Germanic *rīdaną. A Proto-Indo-European *reydʰ- preform does not exist, only northwest-European forms.
Cognate with Dutch rijden, Low German rieden, English ride, Danish ride, Swedish rida.
Pronunciation
[edit]Verb
[edit]reiten (class 1 strong, third-person singular present reitet, past tense ritt, past participle geritten, auxiliary haben or sein)
- (intransitive) to ride; to do horseriding [auxiliary sein]
- (transitive) to ride (someone or something), to ride on the back of [auxiliary haben]
- 1997, Rammstein, Sehnsucht:
- Lass mich deine Träne reiten übers Kinn nach Afrika
- Let me ride your tear over your chin to Africa
Usage notes
[edit]- In intransitive use, the normal auxiliary is sein. When referring to horseriding as a sport, haben is possible alternatively: “Ich habe früher geritten.”
- For transitive use, prescriptive grammar requires haben: “Er hat das Pferd geritten”; but “Er ist das Pferd geritten” is also common in practice.
