Etymology

Uncertain. Usually regarded as imitative (lautmalend).

Compare Middle Low German ruspelen (to burp, regurgitate, vomit), Middle High German rüspeln, riuspeln ("to clear one's throat"; > German räuspeln, räuspern), Old High German girūspen (to resist, struggle up).

  • The pronunciation with /øː/ goes back at least to the 18th century but is not usually reflected in written language. The pronunciation with /œ/ is a blend of both.
