Compare Middle Low German ruspelen (“to burp, regurgitate, vomit”), Middle High German rüspeln, riuspeln ("to clear one's throat"; > German räuspeln, räuspern), Old High German girūspen (“to resist, struggle up”).

Audio: (file) - The pronunciation with /øː/ goes back at least to the 18th century but is not usually reflected in written language. The pronunciation with /œ/ is a blend of both.
