[edit]Attested in local medieval documents as peza (969); from Old Galician-Portuguese peça, from Vulgar Latin *pettia, probably from Gaulish, from Proto-Celtic *kʷezdis.[1] Compare French pièce, Portuguese peça, Spanish pieza, Italian and Sicilian pezza, Welsh peth, Irish cuid.
