mangeln (weak, third-person singular present mangelt, past tense mangelte, past participle gemangelt, auxiliary haben)

  1. (impersonal) for there to be a lack [with dative ‘to someone/something’ and an (+ dative) ‘of something’] (idiomatically translated by English lack with the dative object as the subject)
    Ihm mangelt es an Mut zum Kampf.
    He lacks the courage to fight.
  2. (intransitive) to lack, to be needed [with dative ‘to/for someone/something’] (idiomatically translated by English lack with the dative object as the subject)
    Der Herr ist mein Hirte, mir wird nichts mangeln.
    The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
    (literally, “... nothing will lack for me.”)
