Etymology
[edit]Uncertain. According to different sources, may be related to gopel (“a dirt mass”), Old Norse gaupn (“gowpen”) or Southern Sami gåbloe (“lung”) (compare Finnish kupla (“bubble”)). Also compare Southern Sami boeltʼaajjan-gåbloe (“fireweed”), literally “bear lung”.
