1. (Chinese phonetics) A phonological process that adds rhotic sounds to syllables in some lects of Chinese.

   Synonym: erization

Examples
In Mandarin 今 (jīn) is pronounced /t͡ɕin⁵⁵/ but 今兒／今儿 (jīnr) with the erhua is pronounced /t͡ɕiə̯ɻ⁵⁵/.
