[edit]From the stem of bakken (“to bake”) + -erij (“-ery”). Or alternatively, from bakker (“baker”) + -ij (“-y”). See also the usage notes at -erij. Cognate with English bakery, and German and Luxembourgish Bäckerei (“bakery”).
