Etymology

From Old Galician-Portuguese aljofre, from Arabic الجَوْهَر (al-jawhar, jewel, pearl), from Persian گوهر (gowhar, jewel, pearl). Cognate with Portuguese aljôfar and Spanish aljófar.[1]
