Cognate with German Fuhre and Luxembourgish Fouer.

[edit]From Middle High German vere, from Old High German *fera, from Proto-Germanic *farjǭ (“ferry”). Displaced by Fähr, a borrowing from German. Akin to German Fähre, English ferry, Dutch veer.
