From Middle High German egel(e), from Old High German egala (8th c.), from Proto-West Germanic *egalu, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *egalaz. Cognate to Dutch echel. Further related with Ancient Greek ἔχις (ékhis), Armenian իժ ().
