[edit]Borrowed from Latin Austria, from Old High German Ostarrîchi (the first element of which means "east" and stems from Proto-Germanic *austraz (“eastern”), and the second element of which is rīhhi (“realm”)). The word was adapted to Latvian spelling ( + -ija.
