Etymology

Attested as Asanza during the Middle Ages; from Alesantiam, Alesancia (775), ancient name of a local river (now Río Grande).[1][2] From a substrate language, perhaps from Celtic *Alisantiā;[3] cognate with French Alzette, Auxence,[4] German Elsenz,[5] and with other river names elsewhere in Europe.
