[edit]From Old East Slavic Олександра (Oleksandra), from Ancient Greek Ἀλέξανδρα (Aléxandra), compounded from ἀλέξω (aléxō, “I defend”) + ἀνδρός (andrós), genitive of ἀνήρ (anḗr, “man”): "defender of men". Cognate with English Alexandra.
