Unadapted borrowing from Hawaiian Mauna Kea (literally White Mountain), presumably in reference to its seasonal snow cover.

Literally, White Mountain, presumably in reference to its seasonal snow cover. Sometimes explained as a contraction of Mauna a Wākea (Mountain of Wākea), in reference to the Hawaiian sky god.
