P.S.:A delayed welcome message box is better than none! ;-)

Thank you for your comments on the translation! It was indeed a very difficult one; the German article has a lot of complicated sentences, that don't make much sense even in German *g*. I am not familiar with the philosophical terms too, but I did my best. I am going to correct the issues you mentioned, but the next time don't hesitate to correct it yourself! (Saves time and money ;-)) Kind regards, Tirkfltalk 08:32, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I corrected the translation according to your suggestions. Please can you have another look. I am going to mention you as the proofreader, is that okay? Kind regards, Tirkfltalk 09:44, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I am indeed interested in what the German wiki has to say. I will look this over when I find some time. Thanks again! --Fang Aili talk 15:25, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Proofreading

[edit]

Hello! I replied to your questions on my talk page. It is good, if you enjoy translating and proofreading, because there could always be more people working on this *g*.

Actually, I have some translations at proofreading stage. If you like, you can have a look at:

Thank you in advance! Kind regards, Tirkfltalk 12:48, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for proofreading Thomas Glavinic! Tirkfltalk 13:13, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome! Did you notice Wallenstein, too? I'm not sure I'm doing the right things with the translation information boxes, so I'd appreciate it if you could check to make sure that everything is OK when I finish the proofreading (updating the fields in the boxes, moving the boxes where they belong, etc.).

Trivia: The original text of the Golden Key is also available. It's so short that it's hardly worthwhile making a whole article about it. :-)

I took a quick look at Gerhard Roth the other day and was surprised to read that Thomas Roth was his son -- until I realized that it's not the German TV journalist Thomas Roth that I see sometimes when I read the ARD website. :-)

OK, OK, now I'll get to work and check out some of your articles. Thanks again for your help.

Scbarry 14:28, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I replied again to your questions on my talk page. Thank you for your efforts! Everything seems fine with the translation boxes. Have a nice weekend, Tirkfltalk 15:19, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My problem with the translation boxes at the current time is how to move them around to the right places. I'm not doing any of that right now.

I looked at Gerhard Roth, The Golden Key and Wildschönau up till now. Wildschönau has some lovely photographs in German that aren't in the English one. I don't know if they're available in Wikimedia or not, but you might consider putting them on the translated page.

I hope that "flattery is the best form of praise" -- because I "stole" some ideas from your user page for mine. :-) How did you create a special sub-page for your translations?

Scbarry 01:17, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No problem! I have "stolen" the ideas myself ;-) Simply type the title of the desired page in your browser's location bar. E.g. type in (or click on) "en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Scbarry/Translations" and start your own translation page. – Tirkfltalk 09:58, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think I figured out how to move the translation boxes for the proofreading I did to the right places on the translation page. :-)

Now I have a question about Ried im Innkreis. Someone has signed up to be proofreader for it, but hasn't gotten very far. It's a very long article! The template almost makes it look like there can be more than one proofreader, but I'm not sure how to do that. And if I did, what happens with the person who is supposely already looking at it? Any ideas?

Viel Spass. Scbarry (talk) 16:43, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Simply put your signature next to the name of the initial proofreader. As it seems, the person has already given up proofreading. Finish the task as usual and put the template on the page Wikipedia:Translation/*/Completed_Translations/December_2007.

P.S. I translated the first poem of the article Saverne Affair and changed the translation of the second one. I put my translation on Talk:Saverne Affair.

Kind regards, Tirkfltalk 09:58, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the hint about how to create a sub-page to my user page. It seems simple enough now, but I never would have thought of doing that!

I think I saw an example somewhere of more than one person signing up for something in a translation (by putting a comma between the fields), so that's something that I'll probably try a little later today.

Thanks so very much for your work on the Saverne poems! Between you and Edelseider, they are looking much better now. :-)

Viel Spass! Scbarry (talk) 14:54, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My Hero

[edit]

Scbarry, thanks a lot for your translations. I haven't had time to read them and will not until wednesday, unfortunately. My English is good enough for conversations and i understand almost everything i read, but i am not fit to translate, even if i can spot blatant errors. This to say that i won't be making great improvements on what you have done. I will however ask for other translations from time to time. German speaking Wikipedia is certainly the most thorough of them all; i had spent a lot of time in French speaking Wikipedia too (under a different user name once again) and it is a catastrophe save for some very specific domains. Anyway, thanks again, you will be hearing of me. Cheers, RCS (talk) 22:29, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Saverne Affair corrected (nothing much). RCS (talk) 19:22, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I nominated it for GA because it is a FA on de.wiki, but it failed. So i asked for a review of its FA status on de.wiki too. Cheers, RCS (talk) 07:59, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization

[edit]

Hello! You asked about the categories. A few pages to start with are

Especially the index is very useful. For me it is the fastest way to find the appropriate categories. If you are not sure, what categories are right for the article, simply put {{uncat}} at the top of the page. Then someone else will do the categorization task.

Kind regards, Tirkfltalk 09:38, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your work translating Louise Weiss! Much appreciated, we've been needing that article for some time. Thanks!- J Logan t: 14:20, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No prob, I'll go through it, and I'll deal with the oldest member stuff. Yes you can remove the tag, there are probably more categories but that should be enough for now at least. Thanks.- J Logan t: 14:41, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Magnus Heinason

[edit]

Hello! Please can you take a look at the article Magnus Heinason. It is written in terrible English. I already corrected some typos, but maybe the whole article should be rewritten. Thank you, Tirkfltalk 10:15, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just came across the article during a round of typo correction. I tried to fix the typos, but the article is very poor English too. "A contemporary image of ..." should be a good match of the Danish sentence (I admit, my Danish skills are close to zero ;-)). The article provides a lot of information, it would be a pity if it got lost. It seems that this was a stub, which was expanded by the editor you've mentioned, then reverted and then again expanded. Nevertheless it should be corrected/rewritten to make at least a readable article.
With Greetings, Tirkfltalk 15:30, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Eulogius Schneider

[edit]

Alas ! I'll be very busy this week, more than i expected, and that means i won't be getting round proofreading that article. Please ask Tirkfl (talk · contribs), his English is better anyway. Thanks again, and a thousand times ! ! ! RCS (talk) 07:03, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

To answer your question : the weak point of the German article is indeed the Strasbourg times. Schneider went down in Strasbourg's history as a fanatic who sent opponents to death as they went. Of course, the portrait has to nuanced, but why i compared him with Stalin is obvious : Stalin too wanted to be a priest and studied theology with true conviction, and with the same conviction he then became what he became : a revolutionary idealist turned mass-murderer. Of course Schneider was no Stalin, but he fits the same pattern. Cheers RCS (talk) 20:10, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Eisenhändler = iron merchant (i guess that's what it is) Tonkunst = the art of putting sounds together. This is nothing but an old-fashioned word for "composing" (there also is "Tonsetzer", o.f. for composer, as in Doktor Faustus). RCS (talk) 19:10, 18 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for joining the translation of this article. I started working on it a half year ago, but I did not come that far. I don't think that we have to use a newer version of the article since there have been no substantial changes. Schöne Grüße, Tirkfltalk 09:13, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

P.S.: I tested the template expansion on my translation page in IE7 and it does not work properly. It has something to do with the paragraph breaks but I don't know yet, how to fix it.

Hello! I had a look at your translation and fixed some things. I also answered most of your questions at Wikipedia:Translation/Turracher_Höhe_Pass. What about de:Eduardo Arroyo ? RCS (talk) 20:53, 26 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hm, it is the titles of the paintings that are to be translated, aren't they ? Well, i must say that i am not sympathetic at all towards this article. An article on a list, that is more or less a reproduction of the list itself seems a little unencyclopedic anyway (but you can squeeze anything into Wikipedia, that's its great weakness), but then it also appears to be a list made by an Englishman ! Which means that instead of translating the German version/translation of this list, one should only go back to the original BBC version ! I'm sorry, but i'd never endorse such a strangely preverse endeavour such as translating a translation back into its original language. BUT - i'll have a new request for you in a minute. Necla Kelek

[edit]

What about Honor killing ? RCS (talk) 13:57, 28 December 2007 (UTC) Well, yes, actually it is the term currently used to describe what Kelek writes about (among other things, it is not so central in her writings). I understand that you want to be cautious on such a delicate subject, but purely on the formal level, Ehrenmord and honor killing, both as used by the press when reporting a circumstancially special type of murder, have exactly the same meaning. As far as i know. RCS (talk) 14:29, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi !

I'm the person originally asking about the english name for the F60. The IP is permanently mine, so I'll actually notice messages left on the talk-page of 212.33.149.18, but more commonly I'm User:Eivind. I don't particularily claim to know anything much about the machines, I did visit the visitor-F-60 in Brandenburd twice during the 5 years I lived there, and my wifes father used to be responsible for maintaining the electrical parts on them, so that's why I know them. I just thougth it was a rather glaring omission in the english wikipedia, the things are IMHO, very notable, having employed tens of thousands of people over decades and being the largest moving machinery on the planet. --Eivind Kjørstad (talk) 11:07, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for proofreading the article. As you may have noticed, I tried to come away from the literal translation approach. In my opinion it is much easier not to stick at every single word (which I normally do ;-)), sorry if you had more work on this translation for this reason.
I also noticed, that I am using the wrong words again and again (e.g. "afflux" instead of "tributary"), although I already know better. Der Mensch ist ein Gewohnheitstier. Maybe I should write down these words on a sheet of paper for the next time...
Thank you for your comment on the numbers too. I didn't know that the rule exists in German as well! In newspapers you can read sentences like "25% der Bevölkerung..." every day, bad prose I assume...

Aufarbeitung

[edit]

I'm struggling somewhat with the word "Aufarbeitung". How would you translate the following?

Hubertus Knabe setzt sich für die konsequente Aufarbeitung der kommunistischen Verbrechen auf deutschem Boden ein: „Erst wenn die kommunistische Diktatur den Deutschen ähnlich präsent ist wie das verbrecherische Regime der Nationalsozialisten, ist die Aufarbeitung der Hinterlassenschaften von Stasi-Minister Erich Mielke wirklich gelungen.“

Barbro Luder (talk) 21:56, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You probably know better than I do what that word means, if you're a native German speaker. :-) My native language is American English and I'm largely self-taught in German. I have a feeling for the word, but it is a little tough for me to totally grasp. My biggest aid is a couple of _very_ big German/English dictionaries. The whole passage is a difficult one, I think.
You might get some ideas from this. Pick the choices that fit the best. :-)
Hubertus Knabe is committed to (or supports) the consistent (or logical) reappraisal (or coming to terms with) the Communist crimes committed on German soil: "Not until the Communist dictatorship of the Germans is as firmly in mind (???) as the criminal regime of the National Socialists will we really have succeeded in coming to terms with the legacy of Stasi Minister Erich Mielke." Scbarry (talk) 22:36, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see where you're working on an article about Herr Knabe. He sounds like an interesting guy. I think the Birthler Authority is a pretty amazing organization. Let me know when you need a proofreader for the article. Scbarry (talk) 22:48, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for helping, I've made a try based on your suggestions.
I'm not a native German speaker, but I have an ok knowledge of German (not as good as my English capabilities, though). I understand the passage perfectly, but finding the same expression in English isn't easy. Barbro Luder (talk) 23:11, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bauhütte

[edit]

Dear Scbarry, what a pleasure to know that you are back ! I'm glad and happy that you are at work again. Now, for that word, i can't unfortunately tell you how to translate it. Roughly, it is the workshop of all the different professions involved in building and restoring the cathedral : architects, sculptors, masons, plasterers, stone-carvers, glass-makers... There is little definition on the official website : http://www.oeuvre-notre-dame.org/index2gb.htm. Sorry ! --RCS (talk) 19:10, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent article!

Hello! I was doing New Page Patrol and I came upon Musée de l’Œuvre Notre-Dame -- what a great article! Thank you for bringing this online! Ecoleetage (talk) 04:03, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well...

You could for instance beef up this with that. Cheers, RCS (talk) 07:16, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but "there i am over-asked" (da bin ich überfragt). Really, i know nothing about uploading things on Commons. Cheers, RCS (talk) 12:08, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

St. Andrew's cross

[edit]

Thanks for your work on St. Andrew's cross (philately). I have dramatically copyedited and would love to find more references. In the meantime I have nominated it for a DYK. Cheers ww2censor (talk) 03:57, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Your submission of St. Andrew's cross (philately) at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed. There still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! I filled in the proofread as 100% having done a complete copyedit. Is there anything else that need doing in the translation template? How come the proofreading completed 100% does not show when I click on the more info link on the tag in the actual page? ww2censor (talk) 05:13, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ws2censor - Thanks for proofreading. I had hoped that Tirkfl would be able to do it, but since he just finished up on his PhD a couple of days ago, I suspect he won't have as much time for Wikipedia. The two words I marked, Querformat and Eilmarken, should be checked. My biggest dictionary had Querformat as landscape format, but there was no entry in the English end for landscape format and I don't even know if that is the concept they were trying to get across. So maybe it has to do with printing stamps in the landscape format (wider than high) and maybe not (and if so, what does that really mean with an X?). Eilmarken are "fast stamps", which is why I put express stamps, but I don't know the correct philatelic term for this and it wasn't in my dictionaries.
As for the translation template, you also need to set Stage = 4, which I've just done. Does it look right to you now? (Since I upgraded to IE7 a while back (or at least, I think that's what made the difference), those things often look out of date to me now, so it's a little hard for me to tell. Grrr.)
Tirkfl still has one "postage stamps and postal history of ..." article he was working on but is incomplete, which I may still try to finish up. The philatelic terms can be a problem, but it would be good to finish it up, anyway.

The DYK dudes may still complain about the translation template being on the main page. I don't know of any policy about where exactly the translation templates should be, and when, but I generally take them off the main page after I've finished proofreading, since Wiki articles are supposed to be anonymous looking. The template is on the talk page, so it's not a big loss to remove it from the main page. Scbarry (talk) 08:48, 1 December 2008 (UTC) Oh, and thanks for putting the picture on the German article. It was a good find! Scbarry (talk) 08:50, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for St. Andrew's cross (philately)

[edit]
Updated DYK query On 3 December, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article St. Andrew's cross (philately), which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Strasbourg

[edit]

Hi Scbarry. On Strasbourg, many things would still need to be translated, but some are on not very important subjects. This subject is important, no doubt, and this one too (but the article is merely start-class); and then this one and that one are at least very interesting, but the french language versions are, in those two last cases, much more complete. Cheers, --RCS (talk) 21:48, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, by the way: [1]. Ciao, --RCS (talk) 21:51, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

1898 is correct, because the curch was clasified before it burnt down and Beblo rebuilt. The old remains (from 1478), the chapel, the cloister, the frescoes and the glass windwos now in the Musée de l'Oeuvre Notre-Dame, are actually really beautiful, they give an idea of how magnificent the whole must have been. Thanks for everything, i'll keep you busy, RCS (talk) 07:54, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
