Hip hop groups by nationalities don't go directly into their hip hop's nationality category-- they go into the hip hop musicians category of their nationality. I noticed you improperly switched it on Category:Hong Kong hip hop groups. Just a headsup that I reverted. Peace, --Urthogie 22:47, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Categories are often placed in several other categories. See Wikipedia:Categorization for more info on categories. As far as the convention-- yes, it has been what we've been doing. It's done at every nationality's hip hop groups category.(See Category:Hip hop groups by nationality).
The reason we do it this way is so that someone can be looking at Category:Hong Kong hip hop, then head over to Category:Hong Kong hip hop musicians, and then choose between rappers and groups. Makes navigation better. Peace, --Urthogie 23:22, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just curious. One example of a prominent underground hip-hop group in HK is Likalento. But its members are Filipinos who are either from The Philippines or are born and raised in HK. And they are based in HK as well. Would they be classified as a HK hip-hop group or a Filipino hip-hop group?

Tokyo flag

[edit]

Hi! I've upgraded your image Image:Flag of Tokyo.gif to an SVG file at Image:Flag of Tokyo Metropolis.svg. The main advantage of an SVG file is that it can be made as big as you like without it getting pixelly: compare

File:Flag of Tokyo.gif

As a result, I'm going to nominate the original for deletion, and should therefore leave a note here. smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 20:32, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Since you have a better version, why don't you simply overwrite my version (by hitting the 'update this image' link, or similar link) , why bother going through the precedure of voting? Da Vynci 04:48, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • Because I can't overwrite a GIF with an SVG; as far as I'm aware, the software will only let you replace an image with another one of the same file type. smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 06:58, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I see your point about Dim Mak. However, I think it is POV to equate the FPPEHT with Dim Mak (i.e., wikilinking the FPPEHT phrase with Dim Mak) simply because a reviewer does so. If Dim Mak is included, explain the connection (with sources), but do not wikilink the two phrases. Ward3001 23:51, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

re you tube

[edit]

hi,

I'm of the generation that is still to be pursuaded I need a cell phone, so I haven't a web cam etc. The only video footage of performances of myself I have access to is a 9 year old unedited video tape of a 30min TV programme on my playing. Thankyou for the vote of confidence - but I'm not a touring concert artist, merely a working musician specialising in classical guitar performance and tuition.

Tablature is a curse, I frequently have to repair the damage it does to young musicians who belatedly decide to take music seriously. RichardJ Christie 08:40, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of 猩猩?

[edit]

Hi, Da Vynci. Would you be able to add something about the Chinese origin of 猩猩 to the much-disputed Shōjo article? (I would like to make a stub article on 猩猩.) The Japanese Wikipedia page says the legendary creature originates in China, but offers no citation. If you don't have time or are not interested, don't worry about it. Thanks. Matt Thorn (talk) 07:07, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

LOL. I suspect the "legendary creature" that the Japanese encountered or heard (probably when visiting south China around 6-8th century) is this. Because 猩猩 in Chinese means Orangutan. Also, Orangutan is known for their reddish-brown hair. All other Chinese websites I see and daily usage indicate 猩猩=Orangutan. Since it is a specie that is native to south-east asia and probably new to Japanese eyes ( in 6-8th century) , plus all the hearsay, it became a "legendary creature" and inspiration for Noh play. XDXD
I don't know if should upload the above "theory" ...coz depite it is logical, but i seems can't find reference to support it. --Da Vynci (talk) 13:54, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it is also used to mean "orangutan" in Japanese, too, but the (unreferenced) Japanese Wikipedia page says that the "legendary creature" comes from China. Your interpretation makes sense, but until we can find some citable source, I suppose I should just remove the "comes from China" phrase. Thanks! Matt Thorn (talk) 16:36, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for tagging that article. I do agree that it definitely needs a lot of cleanup. —Politizertalk • contribs ) 18:39, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My confusion...

[edit]

Could you reconsider this and this? My first thought was it was someone's joke, but you don't seem to be making jokes in other edits. Do you really think someone is going to get these confused, or if by some stretch they get to the wrong article, that they will remain confused? Or think of it another way - I see words in articles that I think should be linked, but there is this idea that too many links spoil things, so I don't link just everything I think of. Shenme (talk) 02:04, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi, thanks for your message, lol, of course I don't think all reader who is reading about Confuse will be confused it with Confucius or vice versa. But I bet some might, due to their similar sound and spelling. IMHO the little message on the top of the article doesn't not hurt. Moreover, I found the word Confucius hard to spell and I think it may be helpful to have a link on the top of confuse page for those who are confused about the spelling of Confucius...^^ --Da Vynci (talk) 02:26, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia and not an instruction book, it is improper for an article to say "if rice is served on a plate, eat it with a spoon or fork." Wording like "it is acceptable to eat rice with a spoon or fork" is more desirable.

Also, the sentence you have been adding about how it is tradition to serve rice in bowls is not necessary for the understanding of the section about using chopsticks to eat rice out of a bowl, which is why I have been removing it; it's a detail that would be better incorporated into a different article. —Politizertalk • contribs ) 20:24, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Look, the section is about "Chinese etiquette" , and in Chinese etiquette there is no such thing as eating rice with fork. So any memtion about fork's usage using should be removed.
You can either eat in the Chinese way (bowl+chopsticks) or the Western Way (plate+fork+knife). The western way is out of the scoop of "Chinese etiqutte". Moveover, the almost-never-serve-rice-on-plate traditional custom deserves to be noted. --Da Vynci (talk) 22:38, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kylie Minogue

[edit]

While there's no blanket ban on linking to YouTube (see WP:YOUTUBE), it is preferred that it not be used as a reference whenever possible because of the instability of YouTube links and the copyright issues that may arise. Since Kylie's OBE was widely reported, another source should be used. If you have issue with this, please discuss it to the talk page to seek a consensus. Plenty of people have the article watchlisted because of its FA status so consensus will be easy to seek if this actually becomes an issue. Thanks. Pinkadelica Say it... 21:29, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am interested to know where on Wikipedia guideline says youtube videos are "not be used as a reference henever possible". Your claim (or sterotype? lol) about the "instability of YouTube links and copyright issue" may not apply to that particular vidoe because that youtube channel is owned by the Crown. Please see details on the article's talk page. Good day. --Da Vynci (talk) 01:16, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese name or Japanese name?

Despite it is a Japanese manga, 孫 is definitely a Chinese surname not a Japanese one (romanized as Son, Sun or Suen, depends on the system), even the entry on japanese wikipedia says so, where the third line reads 中国などに見られる姓の一つ。, it even cites 孫悟空 as example. --Da Vynci (talk) 16:18, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List of one-word stage names

[edit]

Hi re this revert: RV disruptive editing. Missing DOB is not a vaild reason to remove names, if DOB need to be included, they could be added. Jin is Chinese (evidented by his Chinese family name 歐陽).

I didn't remove any names because DoB was missing (but I DID however ADD the DoB for two: [1] !)

The two I did remove were Janice Vidal and Jill Vidal - because their respective articles make it clear that they don't fit the "...people best known by a pseudonym consisting of a single word" criteria stated at the top of the List of one-word stage names page. The edit summary said: not BEST known by single names - note their article names

I you think the Jin (rapper) article should state Chinese American instead of Asian American then please make that change first and then edit List of one-word stage names#J to match.

Thanks! 58.8.8.75 (talk) 17:42, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The title of Janice Vidal and Jill Vidal is named using their full name, but but media coverage and their music publication mentionin their full name is rare. "Best known" here means media coverage and how their name is refereced in publication, not "the wikipedia article title".
"Best known name" is not defined using the article's title, if that's the case, as Beyoncé's article's title is Beyoncé Knowles too, Beyoncé's name should be removed from the list?
As for Jin, please read the article and find out facts about his parents first. There is no need to change the article where it say he is Asian American because the sentence is referring to "he is one of the first Asian American to..." which implies an achievement on a wider scale than Chinese American alone. --Da Vynci (talk) 18:16, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Re: Jin (rapper) - in the lead of that article, I've changed "American" to Chinese American, and mentioned same at Talk:Jin (rapper)#Chinese American. I'm trying to avoid the list saying things which appear to contradict the main articles. Can't imagine there's any problem with that solution, let me know if you think otherwise. 58.8.8.75 (talk) 18:59, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've now reverted back the changes I made which you're not contesting but which got undone when you reverted all my edits: partial revert of revision 293557112 by Da Vynci - restoring the uncontested bits - see User talk:Da Vynci#List of one-word stage names - if you see any problems with any of that, please let me know. 58.8.8.75 (talk) 19:13, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a search with the contents of Firewall (computer), and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: Firewall. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally trying to rename an article, please see Help:Moving a page for instructions on how to do this without copying and pasting. If you are trying to move or copy content from one article to a different one, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and be sure you have acknowledged the duplication of material in an edit summary to preserve attribution history.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 00:18, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I just noticed the Firewall (computer) move. I've got no problem with the naming change, but it appears that you did a copy-paste move. That's a problem for copyright reasons so it's going to have to be fixed. I'm taking care of that right now. That process involves deleting the new pages, and then properly moving to the new one. The best way is to just use the "move" tab at the top when yourenaming pages. You should have that ability as an autoconfirmed user.
Take a look at this in the meantime, and if I'm mistaken about this please correct me. Not a huge problem, just something to keep in mind for future reference. Shadowjams (talk) 01:38, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I've looked over the history and I understand what was going on now.
You created Firewall (computer) and copied the info that was on Firewall there. You probably did th is because Firewall (networking) already existed as a redirect.
Then you updated the Firewall (disambiguation) page. Then you placed a speedy on Firewall (construction), and you copy pasted the Firewall (construction) content into Firewall.
This chain of events is kind of problematic for the copyright reasons I outlined above. I think the best way to fix this is to undo those edits, and then to delete Firewall (networking) so that we can move the old version of Firewall to Firewall (networking) (maybe Firewall (computer) can be a redirect). After Firewall is moved to Firewall (networking) we can delete Firewall and then move Firewall (construction) to Firewall. Then, update the disambiguation page appropriatelly.
A few issues this brings up:
  1. There really was no discussion on the issue. I realized some time passed, but perhaps a little more widespread discussion is appropriate.
  2. The stats on these two are way off. Firewall (construction) has about 200 page views a day. Firewall (the one refering to the networking one) has about 3,000 a day ([2]).
I'm going to wait til I hear from you til I proceed any more. Shadowjams (talk) 01:54, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I was also starting to untangle the copy&paste move. As Shadowjams these are very poor ideas.
It is my view that the best way to handle this is to move Firewall (disambiguation) to Firewall, and let the various pages on the subject each remain at disambiguated titles. As per WP:DAB this is the standard way to handle a case where no one topic is clearly primary. DES (talk) 02:10, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I suggest that further discussion on the merits occur at Talk:Firewall (computer)#Proposed rename. DES (talk) 02:17, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I am actually serious about it, I believe HK shouldn't have been given to china or at least not all of it because some parts we didn't have to give back. The C of E. God Save The Queen! (talk) 19:08, 1 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That is true, however there is another faint possibility, and that is a HK rebellion and declaration of independance from china then request to become a British territory again. WhichI do accept is equally as unlikly as the possibility that the UK breaks the treaty. The C of E. God Save The Queen! (talk) 20:18, 1 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Momoiro Clover Z

[edit]

Hi! Sorry for disturbing you. :) I noticed you had removed a photo of Momoiro Clover Z from some articles. I think it's one of few decent photos of Japanese bands in Wikipedia Commons and it will make many articles look cuter. It is also probably the only up-to-date photo of a Japanese idol group. For example, I think the article "Japanese idol" should have these 3 pictures: AKB48 (I think it is better than the current one.), Momoiro Clover Z, Morning Musume. I also think we (editors who are interested in Japanese music) should add some pics of Japanese bands here and there, and the first 2 pictures are simply the only 2 choices we have. --Moscow Connection (talk) 20:12, 21 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Moscow Connection, fellow Jpop editor ^^ I am fine with adding the pics as long as the caption's tone is neutral. (e.g. without words like "famous", "currently", or too focus on something that just happened last month etc) The pic from Platinum 9 is totally fine for me too, given the fact that other high quality articles like The Beatles use pic from 1964, and Nirvana (band)'s pic is from 1992. I think as long as the pic represents a particular moment in history, it's all good :) Da Vynci (talk) 21:08, 21 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I will return to editing only in September, but I've notified Anosola here on his talk page. I think his idea of adding a Japanese idol picture to some articles was good. :) I hope he understands how it should be done (with a neutral caption, without words like "current" and "famous", and adding pictures of AKB48 and Morning Musume too.) --Moscow Connection (talk) 10:24, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm Anosola, a Japanese editor. Firstly apologies for bothering you. As for the page of Momoiro Clover Z, I changed the expression like this. I'll see to it that I'll use appropriate terms. I would appreciate it if you can give me advice as the need arises. --Anosola (talk) 14:51, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Anosola, pleased to meet you :) Thank you for drawing my attention to this, sorry i previously had to revert some of your edits to keep the tone encyclopaedic, I am glad you took Moscow Connection's advices and made some better edits since. As for Momoclo's article, I looked at it and it seems fine. I took the liberty to elaborate your data further, you may take a look and see if you are happy with it. Cheers!~ Da Vynci (talk) 15:44, 31 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation

[edit]

There is a backstage pass coming up to be followed by an editathon in the State Library of New South Wales on 23 November. This is the first time that an Australian cultural institution has opened its doors to us in this way and will be a special opportunity because the Library is providing: one of its best rooms; its expert curators (along with their expertise and their white gloves); a newly launched website (containing new resources); and of course, items from its collection (including rare and usually unavailable material) which we can look at, learn from, and use, to improve WP articles. For example, on the chosen topic (Australia and WWI), the Library holds many diaries and manuscripts from the period.

As you can see from the Library's project page, they have connected this editathon with their own work. They have already set out a wide range of resources to make things easier for us. Please sign up on the editathon project page if you can participate either online or in person with other Wikipedians. Hope to see you there! Notice

The file File:Flag of Kyoto.gif has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

unused, low-res, no obvious use

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:01, 15 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Da Vynci, I've created a new discussion about merging the British National (Overseas) passport article into the British National (Overseas) and British passport articles. Since you were involved in the last discussion about a similar proposal, maybe you'd like to chime in. Thanks, Horserice (talk) 18:18, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Shōjo for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Shōjo, to which you have significantly contributed, is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or if it should be deleted.

The discussion will take place at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Shōjo until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article.

To customise your preferences for automated AfD notifications for articles to which you've significantly contributed (or to opt-out entirely), please visit the configuration page. Delivered by SDZeroBot (talk) 01:03, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
