From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hello, my name is Alan.

  • Formally, I have studied linguistics in the United States (undergraduate studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara and Berkeley in the early seventies) and England (where I completed a doctorate at the University of London at the beginning of the nineties). Informally I view these as mere bureaucratic episodes in the midst of a course of lifelong, self-directed, compulsive learning about the languages of the world.
  • Most of my work focuses in a variety of ways on the study, development and support of minority or endangered languages in many parts of the world.
  • I have written several books, articles, etc., principally on the Basque and Nawat (Pipil) languages.

I have studied many languages in a theoretical context. I also have a practical command of a few of them, at varying levels of proficiency, including those shown on the right, and also...

  • Naja niweli nitaketza wan nitawawasua tik Nawat ipal Kushkatan.

(Nawat, language of the Pipils of El Salvador in Central America)

A mission statement

[edit]

I do all I can to promote the freedom, development and right to recovery of countries, peoples and languages suffering from discrimination, intolerance, injustice, foreign imposition and threats to their existence, and, not having a state of their own, whose legitimate collective rights are denied by another country and its government to whose rule they are forced to submit. As a writer, my most effective means of doing this is by informing the world about them, and this will be my mission in Wikipedia, where I plan to concentrate on presenting quality information on the structures of a variety of such languages.
